I love being surprised. That’s the best part of going out to shows—seeing what your local scene has to offer. I love being surprised. That’s the best part of going out to shows—seeing what your local scene has to offer. Punk rock is one of those ever-growing beasts that depend on the little guy to create, create, create—sometimes they move up and out and become a national touring act, sometimes they don’t. But make no mistake, every band you ever loved was a local band before they blossomed into scene-revered artists.
Portland’s Ground Score surprised me with their songwriting talents. Their album Old Theories on Society is a skate punk loveletter packed with big melodies and rousing lyrics. Look no farther than “We’re Still Here,” an anthemic, earnest rallying cry for all the people who’ve survived in the face of life’s tragedies. You could call it Ground Score’s “Bro Hymn,” if you needed a waterline. Other tracks, like “A Thought of You” are minor and atmospheric, without sacrificing the band’s chugging throwback sound. There’s enough subtle diversity here to make for an engaging listen, but the songwriting—Ground Score’s backbone—is an omnipresent highlight.
Old Theories on Society is a diamond in the rough, waiting to be discovered by lovers of sunny, skate-ready punk rock with just a hint of lived-in grime.
Check out: “We’re Still Here,” “A Thought of You,” “Lost in the Unknown”

Rich Widows had the following to say about their latest single:
‘All Hope is Gone’ is about exactly what you think it is about. I guess the whole song can be summed up by the lines “I’m living nightmares while trying to chase dreams”. The more you want to improve as a person, the more you are faced with adversity.”

The band’s vocalist, Filo Greganti, had the following to say about “High Tide”:
We consider ‘High Tide’ to be one of the catchiest and one of the slowest Edward In Venice songs, so it’s going to have a new impact on the listeners. ‘High Tide’ came together easily; we wrote it quickly and it just worked.
The full EP is titled Empathy and features the guitar work of new member to the group Ivan Maioli. Helping Edward in Venice with the release will be the UK’s hard-working Lockjaw Records. Greganti went on to elaborate on the recording process for Empathy:
There was no deadline for ‘Empathy’. There was no rush, which permitted us to perfect every single little thing in the music, artwork and videos, with the support of Lockjaw Records.
The new collection of tunes is the first from Edward in Venice since their 2015 EP, Howler. You can pick it up via Lockjaw Records from April 26 and pre-orders are live now.
