The pride of Yorkshire, England, melodic punk four piece Bear Away just released bad ass (British translation: bloody good!) new single called “Slow Nothing”. The band also just returned from a little vacation in the Sunshine State, where they played a few shows – most notably The Fest! – and also, coincidentally recorded a music video for their new single.

We (DyingScene.com) are hosting the exclusive premiere for the music video, which I advise you to scroll down the page and check out! Also here’s a quote from an unnamed member of the band Bear Away, regarding their new single “Slow Nothing”:

“Slow Nothing is about waking up from a dream in which you die, or nearly die, and that feeling following you for the next few days, almost to the point where you wonder if you did die in the dream and what you’re experiencing now is just the final flickerings of your brain. Fun, right? I’d been listening to the new Alkaline Trio album a lot, that probably explains it.”

A few bits of housekeeping before I let you go: Bear Away released an album on Sell the Heart Records in 2022! It’s called A Drastic Tale of Western Living and you can (and should) buy it on vinyl and/or CD right here. They were also featured on a bad ass Fest 22 compilation LP co-released by Sell The Heart and Iodine Recordings, which you can purchase on many different color variants here. And of course you’ll want to follow the band on their socials and all that to stay in the know about what they’ve got coming up. That’s it! You’re free to go.

This premiere is brought to you in part by Punk Rock Radar. If you’d like your band’s music video to be premiered by Dying Scene and Punk Rock Radar, go here and follow these instructions. You’ll be on your way to previously unimagined levels of fame and fortune in no time.

DC Punk Archive celebrated the 10th Anniversary Fest with community events throughout October. Bands like Hammered Hulls, The Messthetics, and Flowers for the Dead took to the stage on a perfect day and spinning from DJ Crown Vic. Film screenings of Punk the Capital and Scream Meets the Hangmen, DIY craft nights creating zines, screen printing, record booths, and Q&A with DC illustrator, Evan Keeling at Lost Origins Gallery. All of the events were free and open to everyone; spectators of all ages came out and supported the DC Punk scene. The DC Public Library, DC Punk Archive, Lost Origins, bands, volunteers, and vendors all outdid themselves. See you next year.

DC’s own punk quartet, Hammered Hulls put on a killer headlining show. The band formed in 2019 with Alec MacKaye (vocals), Mark Cisneros (guitar), Chris Wilson (drums), and Brendan Canty assisting the band (bass). Find them here next.

The Messthetics came out in full force with their jazz-punk instrumental set. Band members Joe Lally (bass), Brendan Canty (bass) and Anthony Pirog (guitar). Find them here next.

Flowers for the Dead started the day with an impressive set. This fun indie rock trio is comprised of Jessie Szegö (guitar/vox), Ella Buskirk (bass), and Ricky Martinez (drums). Find them here.

The Chicago music scene is known for its intimate venues, one of the most well-known is the Beat Kitchen. Saturday, November 16th saw a sold-out show at the venue as East Coast outfits Keep Flying and Ballyhoo! stopped through on their winter tour. Chicago-based Robot Heart Throb opened the night with playful and honest energy. The crowd came ready to party as the mood was joyful throughout the evening. Robot Heart Throb are self-described as “made-up genre-fluid music,” mixing elements of folk and hip-hop into improvisational riffs. Jared Hochberg is the creative master behind Robot Heart Throb; a jazz background that informs his style in flute and saxophone playing in combination with crowd interaction makes for a unique show experience. Their newest single “Midwest Breakup” is a pleasant melancholic treat that embodies all things Midwest emo. Robot Heart Throb definitely created a lively atmosphere to begin the evening.

New Yorkers Keep Flying followed with a positive, uplifting spirit that reminded us to keep our heads up in these trying times. Daylight is their latest release which they are on tour supporting. Saxophone and trombone-infused melodies add to the themes of remaining hopeful throughout life’s highs and lows found in their music. Keep Flying embodies the high energy of their name itself with songs like “Transparency’ and “198 Broadway” featuring punchy lyrics and sax riffs that can carry us into daylight in our darkest moments.

Lastly, Maryland beach rockers Ballyhoo! took to the stage heating up Chicago’s brisk November air. The Beat Kitchen turned into a beach party with the sounds of reggae and ska reminiscent of Summertime Chi and simpler times. “Clip My Wings” and “Shellshock” from their latest release, Shellshock are standout tracks to get your body moving. Ballyhoo! made sure that there was no one standing still, the crowd became one with their melodies and funky riffs. A perfect way to close out the good vibe night.

The punk rock community has always been known for giving back. Punk Rock Saves Lives has been one of the leaders in this area. Here’s a guide to some other ways how you can get involved this holiday season, donate, and be inspired to keep it going. Links to the events and charities can be found in the descriptions below.

Punk Rock Gives Back‘s mission statement on its website tells you what it is about upfront and clearly:

Punk Rock Gives Back supports the causes YOU care about. We are a resource and partner for individuals, businesses, musicians, and artists to develop events and endeavors that serve the greater good.

On Saturday, December 7, 2024 the group hosts a charity show, from noon to 5 pm at the beloved Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, CA.

There is also the 2nd Annual Ornament Auction, with bidding starting on December 1st at 10 a.m. PST and running through December 7th at 4 pm PST. “Supporting charities chosen by the artists” per the announcement. Among the dozens of creatives involved is Jim Lindberg of Pennywise; Bones Brigade skate legend Urethane founder Steve Caballero, Monkey from The Adicts, actor and playwright John Ross Bowie (TV shows The Big Bang Theory, Speechless, and more) also known for his NYC punk band Egghead; as well as Four Chords and a Gun, Warren Fitzgerald of The Vandals, Chloe Trujillo, Mike Herrera of MxPx, and Stacey Dee of Bad Cop/Bad Cop, Punk Rock Pottery and so many more. If you can make it to the event, great; if not, you can always help online as well.

Sleigh The Stage annual punk rock toy drive also happens on December 7, 2024, at Boxland in Columbus, OH. Free admission with a new unwrapped toy. Bands on the line. The event is presented by Coxey’s Army and Punkerton Records. Joining Coxey’s Army on the bill is HugeEuge, Voice of Dissent, Rabbit Dog, and Atomic Zombies. Doors at 6pm, show at 7 pm.

The following night December 7th at the Fuzzy Cactus, Van Hailin’ (Van Halen), Faith Sno More (Faith No More), and the Sharped Dressed Santas (ZZ Top) will play. Both shows are 21+ with a $10 cover charge.

If you are under twenty-one, have no fear, Punks for Presents has some all-ages shows as well. Tickets are available for purchase here.

At San Diego’s Tower Bar, Punk Rock Chili Dog Social will put on a Toy Drive Potluck. They request you bring an unwrapped toy for their donation box to support those in need. The Noise Agents will be playing with support from Andy K of Demob, One Square Mile, Strychnine Ninety Nine, and Halloween Jax. $10 cover and 21+.

Combining KT’s Kids, Liar’s Club, and Off With Their Heads has been a Chicago punk community tradition for several years. They are all back together on December 15, 2024, starting at 6pm. The 8th Annual X-Mas Benefit Taco Party also features Grassface and Wrong War on the bill.

KT’s Kids is all about C.A.M.P. which stands for Children with Adapted Mobility Play.

But if you cannot make it to the actual event you can still donate to this amazing organization on the KTs Kids website.

These are just a few of the events showcasing important causes. Even if you are not able to attend please check out the links in the event descriptions for possible ways to donate. And perhaps there are some similar punk rock events in your own area. Be on the lookout for them. But even if there are not, there are many ways to get involved in your community, music-related or not. One thing is for sure, there are few things more punk rock than caring for each other

So Happy Holidays! Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Los Posadas, Soyal, Winter Solstice, Festivus, or just spend this time with loved ones, we at Dying Scene wish you a peaceful and joyous season!

DS Record Radar: This Week in Punk Vinyl (Less Than Jake, Rancid, Ignite, FORUS & More!)

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by Punk Rock Radar:

Less Than Jake kicks off this week’s Record Radar with some yuge reissues, namely Pezcore and Losing Streak. The band has partnered with Rude Records to release “forever versions” (not entirely sure what that means!) of these classic records, each of which is limited to 1,000 copies. They’re also doing even more limited runs of CDs and cassettes, and a box set with all 3 formats and a slipmat, limited to 100 copies. Bad news: the box set is sold out. Pezcore is also sold out. Good news: Losing Streak is still in stock! Get it here before it, too, sells out.

Rancid reissued their B Sides and C Sides collection a few months ago, and now they’re back with another pressing, this time on some glow in the dark variants (the jacket glows in the dark, too, so that’s pretty cool). Good news: You can get the variant on top in the picture right here. Bad news: The sick-ass glow in the dark splatter variant (limited to 250 copies) is (was?) only available at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records in Oakland. Not their website, just in store.

The almighty IGNITE’s 2000 album A Place Called Home is getting its first reissue ever just in time for its 25th anniversary. Due out March 21st, 2025 on Svart Records, the record will be available on two bad ass color variants (and black vinyl) and will feature three bonus tracks previously only available on the European CD version of the album. Pre-order here (US), here (Finland), or here (Germany).

MORE REISSUES! It’s what the people want! And it’s what you’re gonna get because Georgian (the state, not the country) pop-punks Veara are celebrating the 15th birthday of their 2010 album What We Left Behind by releasing it on vinyl for the very first time. This is limited to 500 copies spread across four color variants (a few of which are much more limited than the others), and I gotta call out some shamelessness here: they’re charging 80 fuckin dollars for the two most limited variants. The Newbury Comics virus of scalping your own records is spreading. Anyway, it is what it is – don’t hate the player, hate the game, etc. Buy the record here.

French melodic punk powerhouse FORUS is back from the dead and ramping up to release their first new music in a decade with their new label Thousand Islands Records. But to tide you over they’re reissuing their 2014 LP LIGHTS. The record was sent to the Blasting Room to be remastered and also features four (instrumental) bonus tracks and updated cover art. You can get it on two stunning color variants here (US / Canada) and here (EU).

Thee Street Dogs keep the reissue action going with this 20th Anniversary edition of Back to the World, which is also being released on vinyl for the very first time. This reissue features a previously unreleased bonus track called “Drop the Oppression” and is available on three color variants from SBÄM Records; get it here.

How about some new records with new music? We like those, too! Austrian punks The Mugwumps are back with a brand new record called Domino, due out December 6th on Monster Zero. This was available on a super limited pink color variant but that sold out. However! It’s still available on black wax which you should most definitely purchase. You can do that right here.

In other Monster Zero news: they also just released a new 12″ EP from Teenage Bubblegums! Infamia features 5 brand new tracks from the Italian punk band and you can get it on orange colored vinyl right here.

Los Angeles’ The Two Tens have a brand new 7″ out now on Rad Girlfriend Records. TMac was recorded, produced, and mixed by the legendary Ed Stasium (Ramones, Talking Heads, Slick Shoes (certainly the most noteworthy), etc.) and mastered by the equally legendary Mass Giorgini. Go here and get it on blue w/ orange splatter colored vinyl, random mixed color vinyl, or black vinyl! Vinyl vinyl vinyl vinyl

Screeching Weasel released a few festive arrangements digitally in 2017, and 7 years later they’re releasing them on a physical format. Head over to the Recess Records store to get the Christmas Eve / New Year’s Eve 7″ on red and/or green colored vinyl. Limited to 250 copies each. More importantly! You may notice a lil teaser at the bottom of the product page: “ps. for those curious about the deluxe reissue of Screeching Weasel – My Brain Hurts double LP: It’s right around the corner! stay alert!” MASSIVE!!!

Phillipsburg, New Jersey’s Houston & The Dirty Rats have released a new live record called Live From The PBURG Legion. It was recorded at their hometown 10th anniversary show; grab a copy on “cloudy pinkish-purple” colored vinyl from Spin Me Round Records.

Staying on the topic of live records recorded in the band’s home town, 30footFALL throws their hat in the ring with Live At Fitzgerald’s. This was recorded at the band’s 2018 Christmas show; one of the final shows Houston’s Fitzgerald’s hosted shortly before being demolished. Our friends at People of Punk Rock have three color variants to choose from, or if you can’t make up your mind you can get a bundle with all three!

Also new from 30footFALL and People of Punk Rock Records, the band’s 2010 Jesus, Evils, and Richard Petty EP is being released on vinyl for the first time with three color variants limited to 100 copies each. Get it here!

Remember that 80’s Ramones box set from Record Store Day a few years ago? If you passed on it, I have good news for you! Firstly, you can get a pretty damn good deal on it right now from get_importCDs on ebay (27% off when you buy two or more records and use code GETMUSICLOVE24 at checkout, ends December 1st aka TODAY!!). But secondly – and the reason I bring this up – pretty much all the records that were in that box set have just been repressed and are available à la carte. That includes Pleasant Dreams, Brain Drain, Too Tough To Die (available on black wax and this bad ass Vinyl Me Please exclusive cloudy blue variant), Halfway to Sanity, Animal Boy, and a sick nasty new silver variant for Subterranean Jungle. The box set is 100% cheaper than buying these individually btw, and you get a bonus LP of b-sides and shit – and a cool box to put all the records in!

The friendly people at Wiretap Records are celebrating their label’s 10th birthday with a compilation LP featuring songs from but not limited to: Mercy Music! Spanish Love Songs! Audio Karate! No Motive! And some other cool bands. Very nice! This is limited to 100 copies on black vinyl. Buy it with your money here!

One of the coolest records of 2023, Dutch punks Harsh Realms’ comeback album CVLT has made its way to a new format, receiving a cassette release from Cat’s Claw Records. This version of the album includes a brand new bonus track called “Saving Private Fun”. Get it here!

And for the first time in Record Radar history, I’m featuring to cassette releases – back to back! We’re breaking new ground here, people. Also from our friends at Cat’s Claw Records: it’s the new album from Edinburgh, Scotland’s Bike Notes, whose lineup boasts members of The Murderburgers, Wrong Life, and the Walking Targets! This is due out January 8th, 2025, with Cat’s Claw handling the cassette release and Limited Fun (UK), Bloated Kat (US), and Waterslide Records (JP) releasing the album on CD.

Sounds Rad Records’ latest Mr. T Experience reissue is for the band’s 2000 The Miracle of Shame EP, and it’s now available to buy on green colored vinyl (limited to 300 copies). The EP was remastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering (who’s become a household name, working with Screeching Weasel, the Smoking Popes, Mean Jeans, The Manges, etc. etc. etc.) and features refreshed artwork by Lookout! Records’ Chris Appelgren.

New York Hardcore veterans Judge are reissuing their debut-ish LP Chung King Can Suck It for the first time since its original release in 1989. Prior to this, only 100 copies of this record existed, so it makes sense these new color variants (of which there are 5) are selling out fast. Fear not, because you read the Record Radar, and I’m always here to help! Here’s a list of variants and places that still have them in stock:

x250 Coke Bottle Clear With Black Marble (RevHQ Exclusive) – Sold out, sorry friends

x1,000 Translucent Light Blue – Still in stock here!

x700 Bone And Purple Marble (Retail Store Exclusive) – Still in stock here!

x300 Pineapple (Coretex Records and Generation Records exclusive) – 100% sold out – no dice on this one

x1,000 Black And White Split – Still in stock here, there and everywhere

And what better way to wrap up this week’s Record Radar than with a release from Dying Scene’s grandfather Jaystone’s all time favorite band Lucero? Singer Ben Nichols and keyboardist Rick Steff spent a day at Southern
Grooves studio in Memphis, Tennessee recording acoustic versions of 20(!) Lucero songs. The tracklist only lists 19 songs though for some reason? Anywho, they’re releasing it as a double LP which you can purchase with the fungible currency of your desire riiiiight here.

Aaaaaaaaaaand that’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything I missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave a comment below, or send me a message on Facebook or Instagram, and I’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next time!

The band’s self-titled debut album is due out January 8th, 2025 on Limited Fun Records and Cat’s Claw Records in the UK, with Bloated Kat Records (USA) and Waterslide Records (Japan) handling distribution abroad.

Your friendly friends at DyingScene.com are simply chuffed the band bestowed us with the privilege of exclusively premiering the album’s very first single “Old Crutches”. Check it out below! And while you listen, here’s some in depth analysis of the song from Bike Notes’ spiritual leader / drummer Fraser Mudderbang:

“‘Old Crutches’ is the first song on the album and was co-written by (guitarist/singer) Max and Alex (bass) about their younger years spent making a quick and quite frankly disgusting buck selling well-used but much needed supplies out the back of the hospital they both worked at as porters. That’s not really what it’s about, but they said I could write this thing. I didn’t write the song, so I feel absolutely fine saying that it’s a choice nug.”

Bike Notes’ debut album was recorded by James Johnson at Edinburgh’s Tonegarden Studios, then sent over to the states to be mixed by Jacques Wait (Banner Pilot, Dear Landlord, Off With Their Heads, etc.) and mastered by Luke McNeill of The Copyrights. I implore you to promptly click this link and pre-order the album on compact disc (otherwise known as CD by those in the trade), or perhaps click this link and pre-order it on cassette. Maybe even click this link and pre-order the CD in the states! FUCK YEAH!!! 🦅🔫🍔🎆

The Slackers returned to Chicago once again to host another Slackfest at Reggie’s. The NYC legends headlined both nights and brought along some friends for the fun. Night 1, the band was supported by Todd Hembrook from Deal’s Gone Bad and The Hemispheres, Meskales, and Danny Rebel & The KGB. Night 2 support came from the Operators, Rude Girl Revue, and a solo set by Danny Rebel.

Night 1: Friday

The Slackers have been playing great ska, reggae, and soul for more than three decades. The NYC legends have hosted Slackfest in Chicago for 7 years. It is arguably the most eagerly anticipated event for Chicago area ska fans and many others who travel to the Windy City to attend this annual weekend.

Frontman Vic Ruggiero, on organ and guitar, shared vocals with trombone player Glen Pine. Saxophonist Dave Hillyard, Bass player Marcus Geard, Jay Nugent, on guitar, and drummer Ara Babajian completed the powerhouse sextet.

The Slackers started the revelry with “Don’t Forget The Streets.” The extensive set also included “I Still Love You,” “Old Dog,” “Pick and Choose,” “Married Girl,” and “Wasted Days.”

Ruggiero and Hillyard performed a delightful cover of the Louis Prima classic “Just A Gigolo.”

The Slackers never disappoint the long-time fans and bring new ones into the fold with each performance.

Meskales, from the capital city of state next door jumped into its high-energy set immediately. The Madison, WI crew blasted through a set that included “Enfermo Ska,” “Guerra Fría,” “1312,” “El Muro,” “Skawboy,” and “Mis Amigos.”

A few days after the show, singer Salvador Luna described to me what it meant to participate in the weekend,

Playing at Slackfest was so much fun! We can’t wait to do it again. It was an honor to share the stage with The Slackers”

Meskales serves up some great Spanish language ska. Whilst it’s great to know the language, it’s not a necessity. No matter what language you speak, this band will have you skanking and grooving from the first note played. But yeah, being bilingual is always the way to go if possible.

Montreal, Canada’s Danny Rebel & The KGB made its Chicago debut at Slackfest 2024. The band engaged the crowd from the jump and found itself receiving a warm welcome on this cool Friday evening.

The breezy set included “Spiral Eyes,” “You Must Learn,” “Mad Man,” “Chew Toy,” and “Fire.”

Slackfest meant double duty for frontman Danny Rebel. He also played a nifty solo set on Saturday.

After the weekend, Rebel recalled the experience for me,

The show was a lot of fun. It’s always good to play a city we haven’t played before. Always honoured to directly support our heroes, The Slackers. We opened for them a few times since 2008. Also, really appreciate Reggie’s crew for their accommodation and making sure our cups were always full.

Todd Hembrook of Deal’s Gone Bad (DGB) and The Hemispheres returned to his one-time city with two former bandmates: Keyboardist Anthony Abbinanti of the former and T.J. Annerino of the latter on bass. Hembrook’s deep, soulful voice was warmly welcomed by many of his friends and fans in attendance. Among those were Tony Duggins of The Tossers and Dave Simon of The Crombies and Anger, as well as Hembrook’s bandmate in DGB.

Hembrook, Abbinanti, and Annerino played a tight but powerful set with “California & 26th,” “Things Are Gonna Get Better,” “Enjoy The Ride,” “The Liar & The Thief,” “AZ Plates,” “Put On Your Coat,” and “Movin’ On.” That last tune was from Hembrook’s DGB days.

Hembrook now lives in Northern Kentucky, “…literally right across the river from Cincinnati,” as he told me. However, the Chicago music community will forever claim Todd Hembrook as one of its own.

Night 2: Saturday

Prior to its second regular set of the weekend, The Slackers performed in a more intimate setting. On the floor level of the venue, mostly known for hosting comedy nights, the band mixed storytelling and song for a nice precursor to the final set of the weekend.

Closing out the event, The Slackers truly delivered with a set including “Keep Him Away,” “Watch This,” “Don’t Let The Sunlight Fool Ya,” “Cooking For Tommy,” and “Sarah.” Ruggiero also performed an acoustic version of “The Happy Song.”

For those on stage and those in attendance, this was a pretty happy weekend. Well, at least while the music flowed.

Rude Girl Revue is a supergroup composed of members from such bands as Hub City Stompers, The Scotch Bonnets, Stop The Presses, The Skluttz, and others.

My first impression of the band was to imagine a ska musical version of “A League Of Their Own,” with the matching baseball jerseys. But Rude Girl Revue is in a league of their own for sure on stage and as nearly a dozen members tore through a rollicking set including “Rude Girl Shake,” “Lioness,” “Get a Grip,” “Behind Every Santa, there’s a Mrs. Clause,” and “Slay Belles.”

Belles were slayed but so too was the stage. Give me more of this Rude-ness! If you are in the Baltimore, MD area you can check out Rude Girl Revue at Metro Baltimore on December 13, 2024.

The Operators, from eastbound and down from Chicago, are vets to the Reggie’s Rock Club stage. Hailing from Indianapolis, IN, The Operators hit the State Street venue with a very rambunctious set including “Better Off Alone,” “Don’t Do Me Dirty,” “Waste My Life,” “Ain’t It Obvious,” and “Catfished.”

Both Reggies and The Slackers hold a special place in the heart of The Operators frontman Brandon Sanders. He has played the venue four times thus far: three times as The Operators and once as Brandon Sanders and Friends.

As for The Slackers, Sanders estimates that he’s shared a bill with the group “about 15 times thus far.”

Vic Ruggiero is a mentor of sorts to Sanders and was the one who prompted the Indy-based musician to start The Operators in 2018. Sanders described to me the origin of his friendship with Ruggiero,

We met in 2015. We immediately got along so it was quick getting him down to Indy. I started booking The Slackers in Indianapolis in 2015, and he would crash at my place. Vic is definitely a friend first, then mentor. He has sound advice.”

The Operators return to Chicago on December 28 for Mustard Plug’s Home For The Skalidays 2024. The event takes place at the Bottom Lounge and sounds like a great way to close out this crazy year.

On Thanksgiving eve, I asked Vic Ruggiero what Chicago means to him and The Slackers. Reflecting on it, he had this to share:

So, Chicago has always been a great scene for us, they were the first of a few cities that really welcomed us early on in the 90s. I’ll never forget them singing our lyrics with us from the first record at Fireside Bowl…and that place and others often had DJ nights before or after the gigs, so I’d meet folks…after parties… the local bands and guys like Chuck Wren did a lot to keep a thriving local scene… And cuz Chicago is a touring hub, we’d often be on a bill with bands from all over that I was curious to see anyway… so it was a show for me, too..with our own Slackfest gigs we try to invite em!
Seems the Rust Belt was always our bread and butter for years… a close drive from NYC and tons of gigs between Ohio, Indiana, Michigan… PA, Western NY, Toronto included, and Chicago is in the middle of all that… there’s folks from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin too… places we don’t go often enough cuz we make big circles these days…
It used to take us a year to get back everywhere, now it’s 2 at least, and some we’re lucky to get to every 3-5… or 10 like Omaha!!
so having these congregation spots like Chicago or Austin makes it so we can stay in touch with folks.
I love touring so I go out solo or with a small group to lots of places, but the Slackers is 6 guys, 8 people total, that gotta drive, fly, sleep… staying somewhere for a weekend is like the old jazz bands that’d play weeklong stints… and we get to play more variety of songs cuz we don’t wanna repeat stuff.
We do that when we play shows near each other, too, for the folks that come to more than one.
Plus, Chicago lets us do that nerdy storytelling behind the songs afternoon, which is demented for the band cuz we never talk about that stuff, even with each other…

Slackfest gets better each year. We at Dying Scene are already waiting eagerly for the 2025 date announcement. We’ll see you there! Thanks, and Cheers!

DS Show Review: The Hammerbombs, Middle-Aged Queers, Reckoner, Se Vende (The Sardine – San Pedro 11/16/2024)

The Sardine is a small venue in the heart of San Pedro on Pacific Ave. Similar to other bars, it has memorabilia on its walls, this one has an emphasis on horror posters, pictures of punk rock heroes, and the occasional clown. Beyond the bar is a room with a stage that holds fifty people. Unsurprisingly, the bathroom is littered with stickers, and I only found one dick drawn on the wall. It was strategically placed over a picture of a mic Henry Rollins had in his mouth.

The night started off with Se Vende from San Diego. Clad in white t-shirt and jeans, they are a hard and melodic three piece very much in the vein of Jawbreaker. I couldn’t tell you the names of any of the songs, but did enjoy their set. Guitarist Johnny Cuz and bass player Collin traded lead and back up vocals while drummer Ono slapped the skins with plenty of fills to satisfy the most curmudgeonly elder punk rocker. Their set seemed short, but did seem to pack a good number of songs into it. If you see them on a bill make sure to catch their set. You won’t be disappointed.

The only band I had heard songs from was up second. Reckoner is a four piece band out of Los Angeles. Jennie Cotterill’s guitar and vocals lead the band consisting of Sven Wallwork (LA Crimes) on guitar, Kyle O’Neil (Fireworks) on bass, with Candace Hansen, drummer for Alice Bag, keeping time. Reckoner played a six song set, which I believe is all they have at the moment. If you’ve had a chance to pick up the band’s self released seven inch record, the songs were mostly similar to it, poppy and biting in the proper places, and just as great. They did play a cover of Elvis Costello’s “(What’s So Funny About) Peace, Love, and Understanding” that was fantastic. It’s always great to find other Costello fans in the wild. Keep an eye on them in the new year.

The next band had the most fun set of the night. Hailing from Oakland, CA, the Middle-Aged Queers are here to smash the prostate and make punk rock gay again. Featuring former members of bands such as the Cost, Fang, the Insaints and the Shondes, the band did just that. Shaun, the lead singer, turned on a bubble machine and let out a bag of pink balloons with the band’s logo all over them. The crowd did their part in hitting the balloons and at  each other and back at the bands. Playing songs about hot dogs (not penises) and PJ parties, The Middle-Aged Queers had the most energetic set of the night. One highlight is a cover that started off as Peaches’ “Fuck the Pain Away,” but then morphed into Faith No More’s “We Care A Lot.” It was a great transition and fit perfectly. The Middle-Aged Queers closed the set with Theme Song. The band’s declaration statement and with a crowd participation chant of “Go Fuck Yourself.”

Headlining the show was Oakland’s The Hammerbombs celebrating the release of their sophomore album “F For Effort.” This four piece sang songs about beer, heartbreak, bad roommates, and pancakes. Vocals were mostly handled by Rob Green (guitar), but Ilya Slabodkin (guitar) and Jen Louie (bass) had their moments to shine on vocals, also. The high energy from Matt Diamant drums and their fun brand of pop punk kept an older crowd awake towards the end of a late night. I can’t believe it took this long for me to discover this band.

There wasn’t a big crowd for the show, despite a ten dollar cover charge. I don’t think there were many people under thirty, but that was probably due to the twenty and over age restriction. It’s been a while since I went to a show where I hadn’t heard or at least heard of the bands. It’s been longer since that same gamble has paid off. There used to be this attitude of what if we’re still doing this in our forties or fifties. It’s a worn out trope used in movies or TV shows. The old (punk) rocker chasing either their youth, or some stupid version of it, that can only be stifling our maturity, but it’s wrong. We should be so lucky that life hasn’t worn us out to where we don’t want these things anymore.
