I was immediately struck by how well Portland’s Thurman managed to balance the tone of their songs. Here was a young band—operating in the self-serious arena of indie-punk—that wasn’t afraid to be playful. They were sad, plaintive, and intense—but they didn’t lead you away from the cracks in their facade. “Choices” is the most obvious example, with its low and high vocal performance sounding like a spit-take to make the bassist fuck up his groove. We always talk about how punk rock is a youthful genre, but sometimes, it’s nice to have the evidence on record too.
A Day Called X is five songs of indie-ish, emo-ish, alt-ish punk rock. It reminded me of the lazy-day angst that Title Fight’s Floral Green managed so effortlessly. Both bands pull from the 90s, but the other 90s, the one that lived in the shadow of the Epifat explosion. Jawbreaker, Sunny Day Real Estate, Sleater-Kinney, Dinosaur Jr.—as time marches on, the scales are being evened and the question of what makes punk rock punk has broadened in some ways and focused in others. Thurman carries this legacy forward with stabbing riffs and a chilled-out, catchy approach to melody.
The songs themselves feel dynamic and powerful, a meeting of strong songwriting and thoughtful arrangements. The guitars pop, never resting on their laurels—chugging, riffing, and arpeggiating through their entirety.“Day X” feels positively crushing for any power trio, but its fuzzed out chords are just one piece of the puzzle. Thurman is a mixture of heavy and soft, pop and punk—and it’s in this tight overlap that they craft their atmospheric brand of indie rock.

Personally, I’ve been wondering what took this thing so long to hit my inbox. I was almost starting to think that Thousand Islands Records was holding out on me. :p

Bat Music For Bat People features fifteen original tracks and five psychobilly-infused covers including their renditions of Danzig (“Mother”), the king of surf Dick Dale (“Misirlou”), The Damned (“Love Song”), Gloria Jones (“Tainted Love”), Portugal. The Man (“Feel It Still”), and Panic! At The Disco (“Say Amen” (Saturday Night). Here’s what the mysterious fellas had to say:
“With my psychic Bat vision, I knew the night of the Blood Moon was our time to record the album,” Blue Bat recalled.

I’ve shared stages with these cats… booked them for a keg party once. We had a day-old keg of 9% beer up for grabs that we had picked up for 20 bucks down in the arts district. Woohoo stale beer! We rule.
From Parts Unknown has been working hard for years, stacking tours and making their rounds across the U.S. They’ve got a kickin’ Spotify channel, and have played with countless kickass bands in jam packed rooms slangin’ sexy punk rock and roll carried out with excelsior energetic performances, with the unique distinction of Chris Parrish rocking the swinging upright. Old Benji McCraken wears his heart on his sleeve and slays the six-string… which is a Gretch… which is Wicked, and Jimmy Sefcik is the newest edition on the sticks, who’s poised to push this band into the future… That’s your minds and your hearts, young scenesters.
From Parts Unknown recently signed with Stupid Rad Records as well as Stars at Night to release their newest 7″ EP, S8N this July 18. S8N is a follow-up to their 2018 single, Ashtrays, and the recently released music video for “Burn Your Home“. Good news, Lucero fans. The Memphis five-piece are heading back out on the road for a pretty lengthy run in October, plus a couple three-night East Coast and West Coast stints to bookend Christmas week.
The bulk of the touring festivities kick off with two night stay in St. Louis on October 2nd and 3rd, and runs through October 27th in Pensacola. Support comes from such varied acts as Vandoliers, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, and Rhode Island’s The Huntress And Holder Of Hands, the spell-binding band that joined Lucero on the road on their recent run of shows opening for Flogging Molly. All of that is followed by a long weekend in Boston from 12/19 to 12/21, and a long weekend in Mill Valley, CA, that runs 12/27 to 12/29. Check out the full rundown below.
