While French punk act Guerilla Poubelle may not be a familiar name in the American scene, the trio has been playing together since 2003 and have a massive following throughout Europe and abroad. But, that’s all fixin’ to change now that the Parisian punks have signed with heavyweight label Red Scare Industries for the release their brand new album La Nausee. To better acquaint you with the venerable vets, they sent us a single from the thirteen track LP! And, since we don’t understand a lick of French, we asked lead man, Till Lemoine to tell us about it so us English-speaking folks know what the shit’s about: “’En Marche’ is the name of French president Emmanuel Marcon’s new movement. It translates to both ‘walking’ and ‘working’, implying that we must walk toward our radiant future through work and accumulation of wealth. Macron’s neo-liberal vision of progress includes less rights for the workers, downsizing public services and cutting corporate taxes.” Well, we all have our presidential problems now, don’t we lads…. Now, that you know what it’s all about, stream it, exclusively here at Dying Scene, below! Prendre plaisir!!

Words by Big D And The Kids Table front man David McWane

It was now 2003 and Big D’s van wasn’t running, so we had a lot of time off. And what better to do when your band is stranded for the summer than to make a Gangsta Rap version of your tunes? Being a fan of Rap & Hip-Hop and also loving the art of creating music, I wanted to see what it was like to put songs together in these genres. I went back to the old recording model of tempting Lammi with some beer and fun. Lammi and I spent the summer making Porch Life, a hilarious collection of Rap & Hip-hop versions of Big D songs.

However, once completed we learned harshly that not everyone has the same humor. This was the beginning of Big D pissing people off and disappointing listeners to a curiously high level. And we would be sure to continue this trend.

Porch Life got reviewed by well known punk publications. 1-star or 2-stars, that was our professional ratings for this release, followed by angry nail-breaking typed comments like ‘How could they go to Hip-hop?’. This is when it dawned on Big D that people actually took us seriously and that’s not the way to look at this band. Big D never had the goal to be famous or make it in the music industry. I always say that there are people who want to be in a band and then there are musicians. Music itself has always been our payment. People showing up and having a chat with us has always been our payment. Making the band a strict business to which the mission is to write songs for the public and not ourselves hoping to cash in is simply a different person’s goals. For me, music and love are the last pure things you can carry with yourself after childhood and I am not keen on poisoning either. We made this album, for the same reason we make all of our albums – because it’s fun. To reiterate, we have never wanted to construct verses and choruses for mass appeal, rather we do it to impress each other and would rather someone passionately hate our songs than to forfeit our music to the uncreative, the unhumorous, the sophomaniac, deconstuionist, curmudgeons of this world. Yuck.

I mean to be serious for a moment, how can you give Porch Life 1-star when it has Sully B. Nuts prank phone calls sprinkled through it?

Moving on…

It’s no secret that Melt Banana is one of my all time favorite bands and to keep with the trend of pissing the public off we did a split 7” with them. For me this was a dream come true. It was humbling with little sparks of feeling proud flashing in my heart. Our fans didn’t really care for the release and Melt Banana fans showed their canines to us at the show we played together at T. T. The Bears in Cambridge MA. Maybe the public didn’t know that RUN DMC and Slayer played shows together or that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones & Slap Shot were brothers in the scene. However, to be fair not everyone lacked the understanding of why this 7” was neat. A few SKA-Punx’ers and Noise Core’ers knew the score.

My favorite music memory of all time is when I went to the back of T. T.s and Yako the singer of Melt Banana was there and she said to me, “I love your voice.”

And I know my hero would have never said that…if I had decided to cater to the masses.

Tune in next week for another Big D “Behind The Album” piece. They’ll continue weekly until all 34+ Big D albums have been covered!

Boston punks Bleacher Days are now streaming their new EP, I Only Saw True Purpose, ahead of schedule.

The boys are also setting out on their run of December shows next Friday, December 8th to celebrate.

According to vocalist Wren Mohammed, “The period when we were writing the songs was for sure a rough time, but it was a complete catharsis honestly. Our producer Chris had a much larger part in the writing process, and the songs are all SO much better for it. He’s a really talented guy, and we learned a lot when we recorded with him, so we’re lucky to have him on our team. Recording the songs definitely helped us all cope with what we were individually going through at the time as well. So even though frustration is what drove its conception, in the end we all came out much healthier and wiser people, and we hope each listener feels that with each listen.“

You can listen to the new EP, or check out the show dates below.

For the second time in as many holiday seasons, Boston punks Rebuilder have launched unique fundraising event geared at supporting MALDEF, the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Last year, the band dropped an EP that included a cover of Elvis Costello’s classic “Radio, Radio.” This year? It’s limited-run merch!

If you hadn’t noticed, the rights of many groups in this country, particularly those who were born with a skin pigment darker than “light beige,” have been under continuously escalating attack. This is an issue that strikes incredibly close to home for the Rebuilder clan; drummer Brandon Phillips is African-American, and co-frontman Sal Medrano and his brother Diego of Seattle-turned-Philly trio Ramona are first-generation Latin American immigrants. Here’s part of the band’s official statement about this project (the full version of which appears on their Facebook page here):

Sometimes it feels like the world, and more specifically our country, is moving backwards… We romanticize eras of our nation’s existence that institutionalized racism, sexism, bigotry, religious hatred, and homophobia – on the basis of making our country ‘great’ again. Our government is actively tearing down systems that attempt to provide care and protection for its citizens – on the basis of them being flawed. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world, locking up a disproportionate amount of black and brown people – on the basis of ‘law and order’ and ‘keeping our communities safe’. We hold immigrants in contempt, refusing to recognize that the only people that didn’t immigrate to this land were wiped out en masse by white Europeans, and are still oppressed to this day. We continue to vote against our own best interests – on the basis of hate and fear of different ways of living. People who look different, act different, or worship a different god. These are certainly not new problems, but the political and social landscape of our country looks a hell of a lot different than it did just a few years ago. (I choose the pronoun ‘we’ because like it or not, we’re all in this together. However dissociated ‘we’ may feel from ‘them’, or however much you feel the people in power that ‘they’ elected do not represent you, these are our fellow citizens, and however diametrically opposed to their views you may be, they’ve got a voice. and so do we.)

The TL/DR version of the full statement is that the band have printed up matching tote bags and long-sleeve T-shirts adorned in the same “Defend P.O.C Punk” mantra (pictured above), and all proceeds will be donated straight to MALDEF. Check out the gear options here, and help defend people of color both inside and outside the punk community!

Rebuilder released their “Sounds From the Massachusetts Turnpike” EP on September 1, 2017 through Panic State Records.
