DS News: Rebuilder debut new single “Another Round,” unleash pre-orders for upcoming album “Local Support”

One of the very best things about helping to run a super cool music website like Dying Scene is that we get to help spread the word about music that we love and think should be celebrated. Being a Boston-area native, Rebuilder were one of the first local bands that I “discovered” after I started writing for Dying Scene and so a decade later, it’s been awesome to see them continue to grow and push creative boundaries.

So if every day that we get to share new Rebuilder news is a good day, that makes today double good! First up, the band debuted the second single from their upcoming album, Local Support. The song is called “Another Round,” and while lead single “Hold On” was a Sal Ellington-fronted track, this one finds his tag team frontman partner Craig Stanton at the helm. Check it out below via Bandcamp or find it wherever you stream your favorite music!

Also, the foursome launched pre-orders for Local Support, their A-F Records debut, today! As you might expect, there are some pretty sweet color variations for you vinyl enthusiasts. The album is officially out August 11th, but you can secure your very own copy right here! Also, if you haven’t checked out the video for “Hold On” yet, watch it below and see if you can spot the Dying Scene Contributor who makes a cameo (hint: it’s not me)!

DS News: Details announced for “Godspeed: A Tribute to Pierre Kezdy of Naked Raygun” (Hot Water Music, Face To Face and more!)

We didn’t really have a mechanism of covering the story since the site was still broken at the time, but I’m sure you all know by now that Pierre Kezdy, bass player for Naked Raygun (and Pegboy and seemingly countless others) died of cancer back in October 2020. It was a super bummer for us and for his family and for the incredibly tight-knit Chicago scene, and his loss is still felt by many.

As a way to try to turn the situation into a positive, however, details have been announced for a new compilation, and let us tell you…it sounds pretty awesome! Entitled Godspeed: A Tribute to Pierre Kezdy, the fourteen-song compilation features appearances from the likes of Hot Water Music, Face To Face, Swingin’ Utters, Pegboy, The Bollweevils, Josh Caterer (Smoking Popes) and more! And the best part is that all of the proceeds go to Pierre’s family!

You can pre-order the album and check out the tracklist by going here, and there is a bunch of merch and other goodies available here!

DS News: Quicksand announce “Slip” 30th Anniversary dates

So I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but somehow February 9th of this year marked 30 years since Quicksand‘s seminal debut full-length Slip was released. DS News: Lineup announced for 1234Fest (Rise Against, Jawbreaker, Rancid and more!)

Okay, let’s just dive right into this one, comrades! The lineup for 1234Fest was announced seemingly from out of nowhere today, and we’re here to tell you that it rules. Okay, let’s just dive right into this one, comrades! The lineup for 1234Fest was announced seemingly from out of nowhere today, and we’re here to tell you that it rules.

If you’re unaware of 1234Fest – as many of us here at DSHQ were until this afternoon – it’s a two-day festival that is slated to take place in September. The first installment is in at an old auto salvage yard in Denver at The JunkYard on September 9th, and day two is going down September 23rd across the country at Philadelphia’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion (which is actually in Camden, New Jersey, which is kind of if an old auto salvage yard was a city, but it’s right across the river from Philly so I guess it counts). The lineup for both days appears to be the same, and it’s a pretty great one.

Lead billing on both days goes to none other than Rise Against and Rancid. Providing support will be Jawbreaker, Descendents, Joyce Manor, Pussy Riot and Dillinger Four. Good grief. Tickets are on sale THIS FRIDAY (June 23) – Denver will be on sale here, and Camden Philly are on sale here. Set your bookmarks accordingly!

A week after announcing the departure of longtime drummer Derek Grant, Alkaline Trio has revealed Atom Willard is next in line to man the throne. A few other bands the journeyman has played in throughout his 30+ year career include Rocket From The Crypt, Against Me!, and Angels & Airwaves.

Willard has also collaborated with Matt Skiba on side projects like theHELL and, more recently, Lektron. Shit, he even did a brief stint as the touring drummer for Alkaline Trio in 2000! (video evidence below) Is there anything this man hasn’t already done?

Derek Grant parted on good terms, citing the demands of touring as his main reason for walking away from the band. The veteran drummer spent 22 years with Alk3, joining shortly after the release of their breakthrough album From Here to Infirmary in 2001.

Atom Willard’s first day on the job is June 21st at Wrigley Field. More info on Alkaline Trio’s upcoming tour dates can be found here.

Alkaline Trio

Longtime Alkaline Trio drummer Derek Grant announced yesterday via social media that his time behind the kit has come to a close. Here’s the full statement…

The band followed with a statement of their own:

In light of Derek’s decision to step down as a member of the band, we’d like to send our love and thanks for everything he contributed. It’s impossible to put into words all he’s done, but we are endlessly proud of what we have accomplished with one another.

The 46-year-old Grant was by far the Trio’s longest-running drummer, having joined the band after the departure of Mike Felumlee (Smoking Popes) back in 2001. He also released a really great solo record of his own, Breakdown, back in 2015.

DS News: Mike Ness undergoing cancer treatment; Social Distortion postpone summer tour and upcoming album

Boy, just one bummer story after another lately, but today’s will hopefully at least have a happy ending. If you were like us here at Dying Scene headquarters, you were probably getting yourself psyched up for the upcoming Social Distortion summer tour (with our new friends The BellRays in tow). Unfortunately, that tour – and the new album that was FINALLY slated to follow, have been put on the shelf for now, as iconic Social D frontman Mike Ness is dealing with a recent cancer diagnosis.

Here’s the statement as posted to Social D’s social media:

We think that life is going to go according to our plan, but it has a way of saying “I don’t think so!”

In the midst of pre-production, I was diagnosed with stage one tonsil cancer. I was feeling well enough to continue with recording in the studio up until the very day before surgery. The band and I were so inspired and excited to lay down these tracks, which by the way sound f-ing AWESOME!

The recovery from surgery is a day-by-day process and in three weeks we start radiation and that should be the last therapy I need. The team of doctors are certain that once finished with this course, I will be able to start the healing and recovery process. We expect a full recovery enabling me to live a long and productive life.

It breaks my heart to postpone the Summer Tour, and this album release, but time is required to heal. I can’t thank our loyal fans enough who have been waiting so patiently for this. While it will take a little longer-I promise you that it will be delivered and it will exceed your expectations.

I want you all to know that this has opened my eyes to a whole new struggle. I know it’s one that many of you or your loved ones have personally endured, and my heart goes out to you-because I now know what it’s like from this heavy experience.

I’m surrounded by love and support from my friends and family ESPECIALLY my lovely wife and incredible boys (oh and don’t forget my 3 dogs and kitty) THANK YOU ALL in advance to our unbelievable fans for YOUR love and support right now. ♥️

We WILL get through this….

This would have been the Social Distortion’s first US tour to come East of the Mississippi since the year before Covid. Their last studio album was Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes, which came out like the week I started writing for Dying Scene…in January 2011! Keep Mike and his family in your thoughts if you’re into that sort of thing. We’re sure he’ll be back out on the road before long!
