Archers Of Loaf should be a band that any fan of college radio during the ’90’s should be familiar with. Having formed in 1992, the band released its debut full-length LP, Icky Mettle, in 1993 to mostly favorable critical acclaim. The band would ultimately release 4 studio albums and tour relentlessly throughout the decade. But like many of the college circuit indie bands of that decade, the grind would eventually take its toll and they decided to concentrate on separate solo projects in 1998. Fast forward to 2011 when Archers of Loaf began playing live shows once again. At first, it was a one-off festival here or there but with Merge Records re-releasing their 4 studio albums in 2012, the band hit the road touring fairly extensively in 2012. They toured sporadically after this, but truth be told it’s been a quiet decade or so for fans of the Archers. That is until the release a couple of months ago of their first studio LP in over 20 years, Reason In Decline. And those of us in the northeast were even treated to a brief tour in late November/early December which was concluded last week in Ashville, NC.

Weird Nightmare

In Brooklyn, we were treated to Archers Of Loaf visiting us last Friday night at Greenpoint’s home of pierogis and punk, Warsaw. Opening up was Sub Pop Recording artist, Weird Nightmare from Canada. Those of you familiar with the band METZ, will be familiar with lead singer Alex Edkins who is also METZ’s singer/guitarist. Billed as a more melodic power poppy kind of band compared to Alex’s other band, Weird Nightmare on Friday came off way louder and more aggressive than I expected. I had seen them earlier in the summer opening for Kiwi Jr. and at that show their power pop underpinnings came across in a most jingly way. Friday however, while there was still the crunchy guitar work that defines pure power pop, Alex and the rest of the band seemed to in a few short months to have gravitated to a louder more in-your-face kind of power pop. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed what I heard and appreciated the growth the band appears to be going through. I’m merely stating my surprise at how much had changed since I’d seen them last. One thing I do have to comment on however, is I don’t think that the bottom-heavy sound system at Warsaw did Weird Nightmare any favors as the sound at points did come across as bassy and muddled.

Eric Johnson

Archers of Loaf took the stage promptly at 9:30 PM, starting off with “Step Into The Light” the meandering instrumental off of 1995’s Vee Vee followed by “Breaking Even.” a much poppier upbeat tune from the new album. And then lead singer Eric Bachmann ripped into “Wrong” from 1996’s The Speed Of Cattle and immediately the night was off to the races. With its bouncing rhythm and shuffling guitar work, “Wrong” is pretty much a quintessential Archers song. This clearly was not missed by the crowd who at this point were jumping right along to the incessant guitar work coming out of Eric Johnson’s amp.

Eric Bachmann

Not one for stage banter, frontman Eric Bachmann relied more on his masterful rhythm guitar work and more importantly his singing to convey his emotions. When he belts out the opening line, “There they go, fucking up the ratio. Biting on the skin that hangs off a hangnail” to “Lowest Part Is Free” one can’t help but feel the angst and frustration of what it must have felt like to be an indie recording artist during the crazy post-Nirvana 90’s with all kinds of industry types looking to suck the life blood out of each and everyone of these artists. This bitterness plays a huge role in Archer’s oeuvre. The noise, the seemingly endless rhythmic soloing, the screaming, all play a major role in what Archers Of Loaf were then and to an extent, still are.

Matt Gentling

Speaking of stage banter, with both the Eric’s (Bachmann and Johnson) not being huge talkers on stage, the banter is left to the band personality, bassist Matt Gentling. Gentling has let his hair grow out significantly since the band’s heyday, looking more like a bassist in a thrash metal band than a 90’s indie band. One of his on-stage anecdotes had to do with his hair, stating quite matter-of-factly how difficult it is at times to disengage his flowing locks from the back of his throat. Evidently, with his animated playing style, his hair flying all over the place, if he’s not careful when taking a deep breath prior to singing backup, he’s been known to suck great lengths of hair clear down his throat which obviously makes singing those backups quite impossible in the moment.

One of the highlights of the evening for me came roughly midway through the set when drummer Mark Price led the band with his pounding syncopated drum beat into “Screaming Undercover”, a new banger off of Reason In Decline. It’s a perfect tune that lends itself to Bachman being able to scream/sing each and every word all the while the band rages on with breakneck precision. Of particular note was Matt’s frenetic bass work as his fingers raced up and down his fretboard. This brings me to my one and only complaint (if it really is one) in that with such a great new album just having been released by the band – not to mention their first studio effort in over two decades – I just wish that they had played more of it during their set. I fully understand that for many, this might have been the first time ever seeing the band. They’ve only been to NY twice in the last almost 30 years – in 2012 they played the 4 Knotts Festival at the Seaport and then in 2015 at Music Hall of Williamsburg – so it is somewhat understandable that a cross-section of their entire career was warranted. And to that point they did a fantastic job spreading the material out between all of their albums. But Reason In Decline is truly a very good album and it just felt that it should have been showcased just a little more. No doubt, I might be in the minority on this opinion and that’s fine.

The set came to a screeching and crashing conclusion with Icky Mettle‘s “Slow Worm”. With its repeated refrain, “And nobody’s counting, because everybody’s fine. And everybody’s buying it cause everybody’s blind,” Bachmann led the band through an ear-splitting jam that had the wall-to-wall crowd at Warsaw flowing back and forth like seaweed in the surf. The band would come back out for a four-song encore to the delight of the packed room. Finishing off the night with the slow dirge burner “All Hail The Black Market” from the 1994 EP Vs. The Greatest Of All Time. And just like that the night was over. Hopefully, it won’t take as long for Archers Of Loaf to return next time around.

The War on X-Mas continues. No, not the fictional War on Christmas some people peddle as a political weapon. Here we refer to the 8th Annual War on X-Mas weekend stand, held at Reggies Rock Club this year and featuring The Falcon, The Dopamines, Tightwire; and Won’t Stay Dead on night two. The second night was a plugged-in evening with full bands but night one showcased singers performing alone with their acoustic guitars and a microphone.

Night One

As Sincere Engineer, Deanna Belos typically has a full band with her on stage. On a very chilly Friday night, Belos delivered a set full of warmth and humor. She set the tempo for the low-key enjoyable evening with a setlist including “Bottle Lightening Twice,” Shattering,” “Out of Reach,” “Overbite, and Trust Me.”


English singer-songwriter Sam Russo recently participated in our World Cup coverage and on this weekend, his own national football club was still in the hunt. As I write this, it still is. But his own performance was just as is strong, albeit on a smaller stage, as those of his fellow countrymen. Running through “Runaways,” “Letting Go,” “Small Town Shoes,” “Young Heroes,” Sometimes,” Russo most surely earned new fans. Oh and playing “Merry Christmas, Baby, I’m Sorry,” was a nice nod to the holiday known for its nog.


Josh Caterer performed a setlist mostly comprised of songs by his band The Smoking Popes. He started with “Simmer Down,” then followed it with “Let’s Hear It For Love,” “Rubella,” “Paul,” and “First Time.” Caterer ended his set with a cover of the Nick Lowe penned, made famous by Elvis Costello classic, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.” He was joined by what seemed to be most of those in attendance. If it wasn’t quite Christmas caroling, it was close enough for this holiday season evening. It was also lovely.


Brendan Kelly, unlike years of X-Mas past, wasn’t fronting The Lawrence Arms. However, his X-Mas present to the crowd was a set full of the aforementioned group’s songs, including “The Devil’s Takin’ Names,” “Demons,” and “Quincentuple Your Money.” Kelly added “Suffer The Children Come Unto Me,” from another of his groups, Brendan Kelly and The Wandering Birds. In a tip of the hat to one of the night’s earlier performers, Kelly performed “Young Heroes,” by Sam Russo. Neil Hennessy, Kelly’s bandmate in The Lawrence Arms and in The Falcon, as well as a member of The Smoking Popes, joined Kelly onstage for “Old Mexico Way.”


Night Two

Won’t Stay Dead might seem well-suited for Halloween shows, with its spooky aura and members dressed in all black, in what might be called “punk rock semi-formal.” Not to mention the fact that the band page describes the group as “Grungy horror pop punk from Chicago.” However, the band composed of Saffron Lair, Violet Staley, Tyler Palermo, and Will Lange, fit in perfectly as the Saturday night kick-off band. After all, it was the War on X-Mas. They band was as sharp as a “Rivers Edge,” which was also the first tune they played. This was followed up in quick succession by the rest of the set, including “Wicked Plans,” “Hack To The Bone,” “Somebody Put A Cross On My Head (And It Burned)” and “Sink Your Teeth.” Won’t Stay Dead closed out its spirited set with “Damaged Brain.”


Tightwire from Minneapolis, MN delivered a fierce set including “Party,” “Six Feet Deep,” ”Body Language,” “Spell on Me,” and “Pentagram Tattoo,” “Bitter Pill.” Group members Tane Graves, Paul Mullaney, Noelle Stolpe, and Parker Thompson brought the energy and the fun as they tore the stage up. The crowd was there for it.


The Dopamines, from the Queen City aka Cincinnati, OH, had the weekend’s penultimate time slot. The band, comprised of Jon Lewis, Jon Weiner, Josh Goldman, and Michael Dickson, roared through its set, injecting the atmosphere with a heavy dose of adrenaline. Included in said set were “You’d Make A Good Horsecop,” “Straight Papers,” “Cincinnati Harmony,” and “Heads Up Dusters,” as well as “The King of Swilling Powers Part I, II, III,” “Ire,” and “Dan Teets Runs a Marathon.” Frenzied done right.


The Falcon closed out the weekend with a forceful set and a dash of cheeky humor. band members Brendan Kelly and Neil Hennessy were, on this night, joined by Joe Principe (Rise Against) and Kody Templeman (The Lillingtons). All four were sporting matching black t-shirts with The Lawrence Arms logo, except in this case, the logo was covered over by the iconic red “NO” symbol. A wink and a nod to the fact that The Lawrence Arms was unable to make this year’s show. The setlist included a collection of some of the most unique and colorful song titles you’re bound to come across over a stretch of time. The Falcon performed, among others, “The Celebutard Chronicles,” ”Huffing The Proverbial Line Off The Proverbial Dong Or The Blood and the Frog,” ”Hasselhoff Cheeseburger,” “The Fighter, The Rube, The Asshole,” ”Feed The Monkey, Drown The Worm Or Goin’ Home,” “Building The Perfect Asshole Parade Or Scratching Off The Fleas.” The Falcon surpassed the already-high expectations. So did the weekend as a whole. Looking forward to next year’s event already. Maybe The Lawrence Arms will be on the bill?

I got a surprise message from MerGold on November 12th. She asked if I was going to the Bollweevils show that night. I dig and respect the heck out of The Bollweevils, but Djunah is one of my absolute favorite local bands still playing, and that’s where I was planning to be that night. Then she told me they needed someone to shoot said Bollweevils show. I did not expect that. I sometimes take concert photos as a hobby, but I’ve never shot a band as big as The Bollweevils. I’ve never had any of my photos published anywhere, so I was floored by the offer, in a good way. But, I still really wanted to see Djunah too! Fortunately, I got lucky on timing and I was able to make it to both shows! 🤘


My first stop of the night was The Bollweevils, at Cobra Lounge. There was a great crowd and great energy in the room as they took stage. Speaking of energy, their set opened with a lot of it! After the first song it became apparent that Daryl’s tall stature and Cobra’s low ceiling were not an ideal match. As recommended by the crowd, Daryl did not hesitate to continue the show in front of the stage on the floor. This created a new problem, that Daryl no longer had a set list. His need to know what song was coming next quickly became the running gag of the evening. Every song sounded fantastic, a good time was had by all!

Next I made a mad dash over to the Archer Ballroom, and thankfully I got there in time to see Djunah. 🙌 The venue is pretty cool, but boy was it cold. Donna had her coat draped over her while tuning her guitar and I don’t blame her! Their set impressed as always. Halfway through the first song Donna’s hat fell over her eyes, but she managed rock around on stage and keep playing the bass notes with her foot while blind. The rest of their set went off without a hitch. The majority of it was new material for their upcoming album. I have been listening to their last release, Ex Voto, non-stop and I can not wait to hear the new album. All of the new songs absolutely ripped live.

It’s always a good night when you can catch two different shows in one night. All the bands were on point, and it’s such an honor to be shooting for Dying Scene. I can’t wait to do it again!

Smoking Popes and Off With Their Heads drew a sizable and enthusiastic hometown area crowd at The Bottom Lounge for the Midwest Simmerfest on November 12, 2022. It was a weekend jam-packed with shows and mini-fests at nearly every, if not every, punk rock venue in the city of Chicago and probably quite a few in the suburbs.


Smoking Popes, comprised of the brothers Caterer: Josh, Matt and Eli, along with Mike Felumlee, headlined the show with a reliably robust performance. The band jammed through a set list that included, “Simmer Down,” “Midnight Moon,” “No More Smiles,” “Rubella,” “Megan,” “Need You Around,” and “I Know You Love Me.” Picking a show for this Saturday night entertainment might have understandably been hard for more than a few in the local punk community. However, it appeared those at the Bottom Lounge were quite satisfied with their choice.


Off With Their Heads, made up of Ryan Young, Kevin Rotter, and Kyle Manning, played with intensity during the night’s penultimate set. The trio tore through an angsty set list leaving some in the crowd looking emotionally exhausted, in the very best way.


Limbeck is a group out of Laguna Niguel, CA. The band – Robb MacLean, Patrick Carrie, Justin Entsminger, and Jon Phillip – gave a boisterous performance as it ran through a set list including, “Honk + Wave,” “Home (Is Where the Van Is),” “Kooks,” “Everyone’s in the Parking Lot,” and “In Ohio on Some Steps.” This crowd gave the guys from the Golden State a very warm welcome.


The Color Fred, made up of Fred Mascherino, Stephen Angello, Keith Gibbons, and Monte Holt kicked off the festivities. The West Chester, PA, group elicited smiles from the crowd as its members marveled with delight at the fog machine. I don’t know if fog machines have been a regular part of their shows or not but I would hazard a guess they might be in the future. And though the band members were, at times, obscured by the fog, the music easily cut through to the attendees’ ears during a very fun set.

It seems like Philadelphia ska band, Catbite is everywhere these days. This past year has seen them on tour with the likes of Streetlight Manifesto, Jeff Rosenstock, Mustard Plug, Anti-Flag, and Screaming Females to name a few. And topping it all off with a cherry on top, they embarked on their first ever mini headlining tour a week or so ago which has had them playing in hometown Philadelphia, St. Louis, Milwaukee, and the show which I was able to catch in Brooklyn at Saint Vitus. (Oh yeah, remember last month when Brittany Luna guest appeared at Gaslight Anthem?)

Saint Vitus was the first time they’d played NYC as a headliner and Brit, Tim Hildebrand, Ben Parry, Esteban Flores, and Chris Pires were beyond stoked as they opened up the set with fan favorite, “Creepin” from last year’s spectacular LP, Nice One. This fast-paced “on the upbeat” ripper is one of that classic kind of ska songs that wouldn’t at all be out of place if it were slipped into a mix with songs off the first The Specials album. Its frenetic pace had the packed room at Saint Vitus in full-blown skankin’ mode right off the bat. From here the band rolled right into their cover version of Neon Trees’ “Everyone Talks” which the band released earlier this year as part of a 4 song split with Mike Park of Asian Man Records (to name just one of his countless accomplishments). Obviously where the Trees start off their original with a sort of late 50’s R&B crooner style before they kick into its indie rock sing-along chorus, tonight Catbite started off with a slow rock steady beat before literally kicking into the chorus which they re-imagined into a total ska romp.

With barely any time between songs to catch their breath, the band stomped from one song to the next, culling a set list comprising the most upbeat and raucous of their material from their two full-length LPs (Nice One as well as their eponymous debut). Needless to say, the crowd at Saint Vitus which had come to skank, pogo and mosh like their lives depended on it were handed the perfect soundtrack to do just that. Things would get seriously crazed throughout the hot and sweaty room for all-out R-O-C-K-E-R-S like “Asinine Aesthetic” and “Amphetamine Delight”.

But who would have guessed that things could get even hotter as the crew kicked off the encore with “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “Excuse Me Miss” from Nice One. By this time the band had the crowd full-blown out of control dancing and singing maniacally. All in all, it was truly something to behold. Fortunately, Catbite has no intentions of slowing down in the near future and I know that I’ll be skanking along to them in a couple of weeks when they’re scheduled to open for Bouncing Souls in both Brooklyn at Brooklyn Made as well as everyone’s favorite New Jersey joint, Crossroads in Garwood, NJ. (Both shows at Crossroads are sold out but there are still tickets available for the Brooklyn Made gig).


I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention the night’s two opening bands. Starting off the evening was a band out of Philadelphia that I was not at all familiar with prior to this evening called Riverby. I’m not sure what they’re putting in the water down in the City of Brotherly Love but damn, Philly keeps spitting out really interesting new bands almost as fast as they produce ill-behaved sports fans (sorry, I just couldn’t resist). Lead singer, August Greenberg, possesses quite an engaging stage presence as they led the band through a breakneck-paced set which at times reminded me of the band Heart on amphetamines. All in all, I did enjoy their rough and ragged set and do think that they could be a band to keep your eyes on in the future.


Next up was the band Bacchae out of Washington DC. I’d seen Bacchae a couple of months ago opening for The Linda Lindas and to be honest wasn’t all that impressed. Friday night at Saint Vitus however, changed my mind. The growth shown by the band in a few short months was truly inspiring. With a sound that brings to mind early B-52s crossed with the No Wave sound of downtown NYC circa early 80’s with bands like Bush Tetras, Liquid Liquid and quite noticeably early Sonic Youth was quite invigorating. Both Katie McD (lead vocals and keyboard) as well as Rena Hagins (bass and backup vocals) have grown tremendously in their stage presence and ultimately put on a fantastic set.

The Slackers returned to Reggie’s to headline a bill which included their local friends in The Crombies, plus The Operator, and Highball Holiday.


The Slackers, Chicago favorites from New York City, once again treated their fans to a rousing performance. Vic Ruggiero, Glen Pine, Jay Nugent, Dave Hillyard, Ara Babajian, and Marcus Geard tore through a setlist including “Fried Chicken/Mary, Mary,” “And I Wonder,” “Don’t Let The Sunlight Fool Ya,” “I Still Love You,” and “Wasted Days.” Per usual, The Slackers brought to the Windy City a lively and fun experience.


When The Slackers hit Chicago, many fans may guess correctly that The Crombies will be on the same bill. The two groups have a tight bond in more than one way. Three members of The Crombies (Mike Park, Dave Simon, and Karl Gustafson) are also past or present members of Deal’s Gone Bad. Some of their DGB bandmates and some of The Slackers members have formed Deal’s Gone Slack. It’s an indirect secondary connection but still should not be dismissed outright.

As for the Chicago’s very popular rocksteady outfit, the above mentioned members, along with bandmates Karl Gustafson, Matt Meuzelaar, and Kevin Lustrup blasted through their set which included “Hooligans,” “Staring At Rude Boys,” “Plastic Gangsters,” and “Levi Stubbs’ Tears.” The Crombies also performed its great cover of a song from my favorite band, The Clash: “English Civil War.” Each member has a very distinct onstage presence but it all adds to a cohesive unit. When you go to a show with The Crombies on the bill you are pretty much guaranteed a good time.


The Operators, a ska unit out Indianapolis, Indiana, came big, loud and rowdy. I loved it and so did the crowd. The group kicked the crowd into bouts of frenzied skanking. The Operators members – Brandon Sanders, Gregg Manfredi, Drew Darby, Heath Schlatter, Brittany Brummfield, Cristian Requilme, Sarah Harwood, Dave Grove, jammed through “Better Off Alone,” “Convicted Man,” “Catfished,” “Ease Your Mind,” and “Cards On The Table.” The latter two are Mr. Kingpin songs.

They were also joined on stage by Jon E. Bravo aka Mr. Kingpin, for “Lightening In A Bottle.” The Operators hit the bullseye with this set.


Highball Holiday switched on the show with a boisterous set. Shahanna McKinney Baldon led the bad through a solid set including “Siblings,” “Speedway,” “Why?,” “Skinhead Girls,” and “Welfare.”

Highball Holiday ended the set with a booming rendition of “Ignorance,” The band showed why they’re Milwaukee ska legends. It is wonderful to see a band enjoying themselves onstage as appeared to be the case here.

The Menzingers are on the road celebrating the 10th anniversary of their breakout album On The Impossible Past and they’ve brought both Touché Amoré and Screaming Females along for the ride. The tour officially kicked off last week in Asbury Park at the House of Independents with what turned into a 4-night run. I say “officially” only because the band did attend Fest 20 down in Gainsville, FL the previous weekend. But moving on, 10 years of water under the bridge can seem like a blink of an eye to some and an eternity to others. For The Menzingers, 2012 not only had them playing in dingey basements, and DIY skateparks, but huge sports arenas (as openers for A Day To Remember) as well as large concert halls (as openers for Taking Back Sunday). To put it further into perspective, 2012 was the year Barack Obama won his second term as President of The United States, Vladimir Putin also won election to his second go-round as President of Russia, Hurricane Sandy struck the northeast, the massacre at Sandy Hook took place and Washington State became the first state in the union to legalize marijuana for personal recreational use. 2012 was also the year “Linsanity” took the NBA by storm, Whitney Houston passed away and in the pop music world, it was the likes of Katy Perry and Adele crushing all competition with #1 song after #1 song. But I’m going to go out on a limb and say that as far as the readers of Dying Scene are concerned, when it came to musical events, these paled in comparison to the release of On The Impossible Past by Philadelphia’s (by way of Scranton, PA) very own The Menzingers.

Released in February of 2012 on Epitaph Records, OTIP was a bit of a departure from 2010’s Chamberlain Waits. Where Chamberlain and their previous releases were straight-up punk, on Impossible Past, the band seemed to be making a concerted effort to be more melodic. This in turn allowed the stories in each of the songs to be more front and center. The move from punk to some kind of mix of melodic/pop punk isn’t always greeted by a band’s fan base, but in The Menzingers’s case, their loyal fans fell in love with the departure. The album, to this day, is often considered by many to be their finest work, this despite the subsequent release of some really stellar albums.

This brings me to last Thursday night in Asbury Park for the opening night of the tour. I wasn’t sure if they would be doing the album in chronological order or mixing it up and wasn’t totally sure which way I was leaning as far as a preference was concerned. Sometimes the track sequencing of an album doesn’t always translate into a proper flow for a live show but as I would soon find out, OTIP is one of those albums which works perfectly in a live setting from start to finish. Obviously, the opening lines of “I’ve been having a horrible time, pulling myself together” from opening track “Good Things” is a veritable microcosm of what many of us have been experiencing the last 10 years, and HOLY HELL, what a way to start off a set! And right from the get-go, we were off and running. Next up was of course “Burn After Writing” with its call and response line “Do my hands tell a story? Is it boring you?” Fuck no, thus far it was nothing even remotely close to boring.

Those who were familiar with the album already knew what was up next and by “those” I mean just about every sweaty body in The House. “Obituaries” started off with that spine-tingling chord strumming from Tom and before Eric and Joe could kick into their pounding rhythms, the entire room (or at least as far as I could see) was one large pulsing, jumping, screaming and slamming mosh pit.

The band appeared to be having an absolute blast on stage (even more so than usual). Tom was, as usual, a non-stop jumping machine, bouncing all over the stage mouthing each and every word (especially while Greg was singing lead into the mike). Following the album’s sequencing was working perfectly as everyone in the room knew what was next and was right on queue when each new song commenced. We did get a little back story from Greg regarding “Mexican Guitars” but all in all there really wasn’t all too much stage banter from the guys. In hindsight, this lack of Greg and Tom talking about the songs had me a little disappointed but then I thought that ehhhh, we can save that for the album’s 20th anniversary VH1 Behind The Music episode.

Upon conclusion of the album’s closer “Freedom Bridge” and its lines, “something happened on the way to hell”, Tom assured the crowd that things were far from over as the band kicked into “I Don’t Want To Be An Asshole Anymore” from Impossible Past‘s follow up album Rented World. With its chugging chords and anthemic chorus, the crowd again erupted into the frenzy that Menzinger fans have come to know and love about their shows. Needless to say, what remained was basically a best-of-the-rest set from the band. “House On Fire” to “Anna” to “In Remission” to “Lookers” to “Your Wild Years” and a close out of the evening with “After The Party”.

I for one was 100% satisfied with what the boys from Pennsylvania offered up to us. I was pretty much soaked in sweat from head to toe. I had a decent bruise on the side of my head from getting kicked in the noggin by a crowd surfer who I didn’t see coming as was too busy scoping the stage through my camera lens (something I know is risky in the front of a Menzingers pit, but sometimes you just need to do what you’ve got to do). And my throat was sore and raspy from shouting lyrics at the top of my lungs.

I would be remiss if I did not mention and/or share some words on the opening bands that are gracing the stage along with The Menzingers on this tour. First up was New Jersey’s own Screaming Females. I’ve seen this band numerous times over the years although not all that much in the last 5 or so. Anyway, I can honestly say that I have never seen them where I wasn’t completely blown away. Marissa Paternoster, in my humble opinion, is one of, if not the best, punk guitarists today. Her guitar chops are just completely unparalleled. I could listen and watch her shred on the guitar night in and night out and still experience something jaw-dropping each and every time.

Jeremy Bolm of Touché Amoré

With the unenviable task of not only having to follow The Screaming Females but also precede The Menzingers was Los Angeles’s own Touché Amoré. Familiar with the band in name only, I was not at all prepared for the onslaught and fury which singer Jeremy Bolm and the rest of the crew were about to unleash on myself and everyone in attendance. While their brand of post-hardcore punk isn’t something that I generally fancy, I have to admit that the energy, spirit and general ferocity of their set was eye-openingly inspiring.

All in all, I have to say that while “anniversary” tours can sometimes be nothing more than a cash grab, and oftentimes turn out to be somewhat cringe-worthy, this romp around the country by The Menzingers to celebrate On The impossible Past seems to be anything but. First and foremost, it helps that the band itself is at the top of their game. No, let me correct that, they are not at the top of their game at all, because they just seem to be getting better and better, they haven’t even reached the pinnacle just yet. Second, OTIP is such a stellar LP that paying homage to it, by playing it straight through is sheer pop-punk heaven. And lastly, the support acts of Screaming Females and Touché Amoré rock the fuck out of the crowd. They take things to a whole other level, to which even IF The Menzingers were inclined to mail it in, they could never because they’re being pushed so hard by these two openers.

This tour just started so by all means, check your local listings and if it’s passing through a town near you, do yourself a favor and go see the show,

Wichita, Kansas native singer/songwriter Yasmin Nur opened the night with her band and brought along all the dreamy-yet-dark indie rock vibes you can ever ask for.


Jigsaw Youth quickly became one of my favorite bands after seeing them at Cobra Lounge in 2021 with Destroy Boys. The sludge-grunge queens of New York brought the same howling energy as they did last year and introduced the new single “Skin.”


Pinkshift released their debut album Love Me Forever on October 21, 2022 through Hopeless Records. The empowering and emotional album boasts several stellar hits including “i’m not crying you’re crying,” “nothing (in my head)” and “BURN THE WITCH.”

The new wave of pop punk is here and this album deserves to be a part of it!

Earlier this year, Dying Scene introduced our readers to Noah Corona, the founder of Punk Rock Tacos. Corona put on a party for PRT’s 1st Anniversary on October 21, 2022. Held at PRT’s home venue, Cemitas Poblanas in Villa Park, IL, it doubled as a Halloween costume party and featured bands from in and outside of Illinois, including headliners Boss’ Daughter.


Boss’ Daughter, out of Reno, Nevada, actually took to the stage just after midnight on the 22nd. The trio, composed of singer/guitar player Chris Fox, Jamie Locks on drums, and Danny Paul on bass, ran through a generous set, including “Stupid Chords, Stupid Words, Stupid Song,” “Help To Forget,” “Religious Convenience,” “Embrace Impermanence, and “Photography.” That last tune is a lovely song, which naturally I liked, not just for the title, but rather for the sentiment expressed within. It describes a query, likely most of us photographers will ask ourselves every once in a while.

Though mostly lost that snap of beauty remembers

Somebody wrote the song for how I’m feeling

So I’ll just sit and listen.”

Simply put it, was a very affecting set.


SUMPP is normally composed of Neil P. and Weftin, but on this night drummer, Phil Warren, was added to the mix. The group’s set was highly animated. I use the word animated because the band members, with limbs flailing and growling facial expressions, brought to mind Taz, The Tasmanian Devil from the classic Loony Tunes cartoons. SUMPP drove through “Consume!,” “Laid off,” “The Best, The Worst, and the Most Likely” (written by Weftin, unlike all the other songs which were written by Neil P.) “Pillz,” “Terminator 2 was Right” “Talkin’ Spit,” and “Cranks.” It was an absolutely frenzied performance, one which left many uninitiated to SUMPP, slightly stunned. But the gaped look on many of the attendees soon turned to smiles and laughs. It was a reaction I am betting Neil P and Weftin were pleased to see.


The Turdles – yes that band name is spelled correctly and a play on we all know what, from Elgin IL – played a lively set with “Courtyard,” Dick Pic,” “Why You Gotta Call The Cops,” and “Empty Hallways” included in the set list. As evidenced by their name, this is a band that uses humor to engage the audience. Lead singer Josh Holbrook, Dave Cherek on bass, Dan Cuchiara on guitar, and drummer Charlie Stanley hit their marks this night, and have been doing so for more than a decade and a half. If you have a chance, go catch one of the band’s shows.


Grey Trash Aliens has a unique name and as this event was a costume party as well as a first-anniversary show, band members appeared looking pretty unique as well. Bass player and vocalist Patrick Mineau appeared with a large fake blood stain on his t-shirt to resemble a stab wound to his right side. Said shirt emblazoned with the words, “I’m Fine.” On his cap, a pair of scissors appears to be lodged into his skull. Adam Spizziri, Lead guitar wore a cap and bug-eye sunglasses. He matched in this themes, guitar player Mike Milman who wore a full-on alien bug-looking costume, including full mask. The set, which included among others “Unsocial Media,” “Basement,” “Believe It,” and “Addiction,” was as quirky as the name of the band. It zoomed through the set serving up a blast-off of a good time.


Chicago hardcore trio Anger is composed of half of the Chicago two-tone band The Crombies. Each member has their own distinct performance style. Dave Simon, its lead singer, is also the guitar player for the very popular rocksteady group, Deal’s Gone Bad. Simon is a prominent and colorful figure in the Chicago punk scene. His usual performance incorporates spins, climbs on front stage amps, and being carried through the crowd, on the shoulders of friends, but when in the role of lead singer/guitar player he is more closely tied to the microphone. But he is no less compelling, and every vocal break sets him free to engage the crowd. Matt Meuzelaar is a power drummer. Stoically pounding away, he perfectly balances out the rowdiness of Simon. In the middle, Kevin Lustrup, is light on his feet as he bounces, usually in place. Lustrup and Meuzelaar drive the backbeat’s engine. Altogether, this adds up to forceful performances on the regular. On this night they jammed through another solid set including, “Hard Livin’,” “Earth,” “Lost Last Night,” “Blood,” and “Fucked Up.” Anger also played “Listen Up” written by Simon way back in 1986. The crowd seemed pretty happy to have Anger at this party and Anger seemed pretty happy to have the crowd.


Torch The Hive, from Chicago, kickstarted the party with a fiery performance. The band is made up of Mike Fruel on guitar and vocals, Tyler Sanders on bass, and drummer Sergio Apanco. The set included “Copaganda,” “F.E.A.,” “Molotov Trail,” and “Evil Men,” along with other tunes. The band did not torch any hives at this event, but it did torch the stage. It was a blazing performance, and the crowd obviously dug it. I did too.


Punk Rock Tacos has had a terrific first year full of shows featuring great bands, but the atmosphere is an equal draw. Events take place inside the venue as well as outside. The latter sometimes requires making stages out of trucks and other objects. It is a good time, where old friends hang out and new friends are made. I, for one, hope Corona along with Matt Durica, his partner in this venture, keep it up for years to come.

Don’t you just hate when life gets in the way of the fun things? It’s taken me way too long to get this written up, and for that I wholeheartedly apologize. So without any further ado, here are my thoughts on what has turned into Lucero’s annual mid-October visit to New York City.

I arrived at Music Hall of Williamsburg a little earlier than expected due to a surprising lack of traffic on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway aka the BQE (if you’re from NY, you know what a surprise it is whenever there isn’t any traffic on this highway). So walking into the venue, to see the room completely empty was a bit startling. At about 8 PM the handful of people in the room were greeted on stage by an unannounced comedian friend of Ben Nichols and the band. (I apologize for not having caught his name but if anyone does know it please leave it in the comments so that I can include it in this piece.) Not surprisingly, standing on a stage in front of maybe a dozen people in a room meant to hold up to 600, led to this sparsity of people to become the focal part of the act. Eventually hitting his stride, especially when he got on the topic of a certain sex act which much to his surprise, millennials have brought to the mainstream, the crowd (or those who were there at least) quite enjoyed the act.


L.A. Edwards, a foursome consisting of 3 brothers plus one, from Nashville by way of San Diego are the official opening act on this tour and they took the stage right at 8:30. With a vocal style very reminiscent of Jackson Browne, lead singer Luke Edwards along with brothers Jay and Jerry as well as guitarist Landon Pigg offered up a really nice opening set laced with soulful Laurel Canyon style harmonies backed by a mix of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers crossed with Dawes brand of rock and roll.

Ben Nichols, Brian Venable, John Stubblefield, Roy Berry and Rick Steff AKA Lucero took the stage shortly before 10 PM and started things off with “For The Lonely Ones” from 2018’s Among The Ghosts. Following this up with 2 fan favorites in “Chain Link Fence” and “Sweet Little Thing” both from their classic Tennessee LP, the boys now had the audience (which had grown into an actual “crowd” by now) singing and shouting right along with Ben at the top of their lungs.


Which brought us to the first of what would be 5 new songs on the evening. As you all have probably heard (or read right here in Dying Scene), Lucero will be releasing their latest full-length LP, Should’ve Learned By Now in February 2023. “Drunken Moon” is a slow burner ballad with actual backup vocals included which the Edwards boys from L.A. Edwards would come onstage to help out with. Ben, while calling them out onstage to help out with vocals, made fun of himself by saying that he’s been called an “anti-harmony” singer since such things are so rare on Lucero songs.


Throughout the rest of the evening we would be treated to “Buy A Little Time”, “Macon If We Make It”, “Nothing’s Alright” and “One Last F.U.” (encore) from the upcoming album. Unlike “Drunken Moon” these other 4 songs are for the most part serious rockers which the band seemed to be having a blast playing. This brings me to one observation which I was happy to see. We all know that 99% of the time we can expect Ben to be…well for lack of a better way to describe it, BEN. And of course this “Ben-ness” often has a direct correlation as to the amount of whiskey passed to the stage from the crowd. This night in Brooklyn was no different than in the past with one exception.


Brian seemed to be much more animated than he has been in quite some time. He jumped into one of Ben’s monologues at one point to say that Lucero had been playing at Music Hall Of Williamsburg for quite some time now, going all the way back to its days when it was known as The North Six. He even started to tell the story of when he played on this stage completely naked, then he came to his senses and held off on sharing the grim details.


In any event, my point is that more so than I’ve seen in the recent past at least, the boys in the band appeared to be having a truly great time on stage. Of course John was his usual campy self on bass and Roy just sat back and had a grand old time beating the hell out of the skins.


It was particularly great to see Rick doing well sitting behind the keyboards with his stately new (to me at least) tied-back ponytail. (Unfortunately, we were not graced with Rick pulling out the accordion on this particular evening, but it was really great to see that he was clearly on the mend from his health issues). Ben even took the time to mention that while this might have been the smallest crowd that they’d thus far played to on this tour, it was by far the most fun and best show (from his perspective) so far.

All in all, it was a fantastic way to pass away an otherwise mundane Tuesday evening in NYC. In what turned out to be a bit of foreshadowed irony, Ben did mention at the end of the show how he was really looking forward to their drive after the show over to beautifully scenic Secaucus, NJ which got quite a cackling of laughter from the crowd. Of course, the irony reared its ugly head the following day when a member of the band’s touring crew had some medical issues and the tour bus was basically sequestered for the next 3 or 4 days in “beautifully scenic Secaucus“.
