Nick & June cast a morning haze with ‘Hugh Grant & His Consequence’

There’s a long held notion about music aligning with the seasons; lighter, sunnier sounds are fit for spring or summer, where more dramatic, lush compositions with a heavier density slot nicely in autumn or winter. We’re taking that idea and examining it through a sharper lens, all to suggest that the music of Nick & June is less about the wider, more populated season designation and more fit for micro-slotting in a certain time of day — more specifically, those […]

Interview: Nickel Creek on relationships, chemistry, and ‘Celebrants’

The bluegrass community’s cup runneth over: After a near decade-long drought, the notes are flowing from Nickel Creek once again. The Southern California group returned to their roots as a twangy trio earlier this year with Celebrants, Nickel Creek’s first studio album since 2014’s A Dotted Line. But even with a nine-year gap between their mandolin-plucking past and present, guitarist Sean Watkins says the group still offers a gushing wellspring of inspiration, both in the studio and on the road. […]

TV Eyes: The Walkmen unleash ‘The Rat’ on ‘The Late Show’

We always like to say that music festivals are all about moments, and Memorial Day weekend’s Boston Calling should provide plenty. One moment we are looking forward to very much arrives Sunday evening, when The Walkmen return to town and hold court on the Blue Stage. The reunited New York City indie band are equipped with one of the greatest songs we’re likely to hear all weekend, “The Rat,” and they dusted it off after a decade of dormancy earlier […]

Body of Light pull us back in to a place we never left on ‘This Conversation’

“Let’s elevate those expectations in your head.” That’s the opening line to “This Conversation,” the slinky new single out this week from Arizona electronic-pop and neo-EBM project Body of Light. It comes off as both a seductive challenge and a confrontational promise, and feels like a loaded sentiment after brothers Alex and Andrew Jarson helped reshape genre shadows with 2019’s modern masterpiece Time To Kill. Fair or otherwise, expectations were already high before and after the release of crystalline March […]
