When drummer Dave Masud isn’t slapping skins for the Vampirates, he’s busy making his own music. On May 1st, Dave released Three Quarter Life Crisis, his latest solo record. Dave has crafted a record that’s a visceral look at middle age as your body and the world breaks down around you. The songs are lyrically dark, but musically bright in more spots than you’d think. While the record mostly stays in punk rock mode, Masud sneaks in a bit of dub reggae with the cleverly named “DU(M)B,” but shines on songs like “Dead Friends Song” and “After the Storm.”

Check out the video below for After the Storm below:

If you like what you’ve heard, support Dave and his music. The record is available almost everywhere you can stream music, but you can buy it directly from Dave at his Bandcamp.

‘The Death of Robin Hood’ Review: Print the legend

Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood is about as unappetizing a summer release as one can imagine, and that’s not to suggest that putting this movie out in November (or, let’s be real, January) would have fundamentally changed much about what’s wrong with it. But there’s something particularly egregious about releasing a revisionist Robin Hood – no Merry Men here, fuckhead, just cold-hard-steel – soaked in desaturated greys and blues during the time of year when folks yearn the […]

‘Toy Story 5’ Review: Well, at least we had ‘Hoppers’

In retrospect, Forky might have been a mistake. Sure, Tony Hale’s utensil-turned-plaything might have been the best part of Toy Story 4, a funny existentialist bit (with a dash of Ligotti-esque nihilism about the curse of consciousness tossed in there as well) in a movie frequently bereft of amusement, but it opened the floodgates for Pixar to pursue this train of thought in further sequels. Andrew Stanton’s Toy Story 5 sees the studio declare a tablet — and a child […]
