Dying Scene Album Review: Trashed Ambulance “Future Considerations”

Imagine this if you will, the year is 1999, it is the beginning of Summer, and you’re surrounded by nothing but wilderness and beautiful landscape. You’re about to take a dive off of a 40-foot cliff into a lake, which is really living in the moment. Now the loud music you have blasting on your […]

Imagine this if you will, the year is 1999, it is the beginning of Summer, and you’re surrounded by nothing but wilderness and beautiful landscape. You’re about to take a dive off of a 40-foot cliff into a lake, which is really living in the moment.

Now the loud music you have blasting on your stereo smacks you back into reality. Some fine-tuned punk rock, heavy on the melody and heavy on the fun. You pull off your headphones and stand up to stretch. What was going on before? Were you dreaming?

I was a part of a school-sponsored trip to Canada the Summer before my Junior year of High School, and what was described above actually happened. This was my formal introduction to the wonderful Country of Canada. Fast forward some twenty or so years, and Canada isn’t just a vacation destination for those who love the outdoors.

Canada has become an epicenter for punk rock for the past ten to fifteen years, boasting such great bands as Propagandhi, The Flatliners, Belvedere, Mute, and Silverstein. That’s only naming a few of the many bands who have put Canada on the map for punk rock music.

Trashed Ambulance is a three piece skatepunk/pop punk band out of Red Deer, Alberta and Future Considerations is the band’s third full length album. It is also the first album with the current lineup.

For me being a relatively new fan, after giving Future Considerations a spin, it felt like I have been listening to these guys for years. The influences in their music is instantly apparent and adding their own sound is what drew me to writing this review.

The opening track “56” sets the tone for what is going to be a very loud, energetic, upbeat, melodic and fun album. “Menace” is a standout track, mixing elements of pop punk and skatepunk into a very jumpy and poppy rock tune. On one hand, I can hear Pennywise, specifically their sound from the album All or Nothing, and on another hand I hear NOFX on this track. I really love the dueling vocals with Emilie Plamondon and Robbie Moron on “Stalk in the Park,” it gives a vibe reminiscent of the cover of “Fairytale in New York,” by No Use for a Name. “Blip on the Radar” is my absolute favorite track on the entire album and can be considered a punk rock anthem. I can already picture the crowd singing this one aloud while pumping their fists and chugging their domestic beers. This is a really fun and catchy tune that will likely become a fan favorite.

Trashed Ambulance consists of three members: Josh Hauta – Guitar/Vocals, Jason “Ozone” Ezeard – Bass/Vocals and Riley Bourne – Drums/Vocals. “We tried not to make a paint by numbers skate punk record,” exclaims Hauta. “This album was a true collaboration of ideas between the band members and producer Casey Lewis. We are proud of how it turned out and while we’re under no illusions that we will change the world with a skate punk record in 2022, we are still stoked to be able to present an accurate representation of the band and how we operate in current times.”

They should be proud, this is another solid effort by a hard-working punk rock band. I am pretty confident it will be in heavy rotation among the punk rock scene and those of you reading this review. Do yourself a favor and give this one a spin!

Future Considerations is available on CD and Vinyl via Thousand Islands Records.

Dying Scene Record Radar: New punk vinyl releases & reissues (Pulley, Anti-Flag, A Wilhelm Scream & more)

Hello friends, and welcome back to the Dying Scene Record Radar! In the unlikely case that you missed me last week, I offer my sincere apologies. I was out of town for my birthday so the Record Radar went on a very brief hiatus. Anyway, I’m back and a lot of exciting stuff seems to have happened while I was gone. So this week we’ll be playing a little catch up. Let’s get into it!

DustyWax Records is giving Pulley‘s 60 Cycle Hum a 25th Anniversary reissue. This is the first time this melodic punk classic will be in print since its initial release in 1997. If you live in Canada, you’ll want to pre-order here. For my fellow Americans, Thousand Islands Records still has some copies available on their webstore. And our European friends can get it here.

Anti-Flag‘s The General Strike is getting a 10th Anniversary reissue (how the fuck was 2012 ten years ago?). This is limited to 2,000 copies on red vinyl, with new artwork and two “previously unreleased” tracks. Pre-order yours here.

FACT CHECK: These songs were, in fact, previously released! They were on a digital EP that was given away to attendees of the band’s tour in support of The General Strike. It hurts me to say Anti-Flag is fake news.

Fat Wreck Chords continues their 25th Anniversary reissue series with the Teen Idols‘ self-titled debut LP. Original pressings of this record are very hard to come by; the cheapest on Discogs right now is $72 after shipping. This reissue is on half black/half yellow vinyl, not sure how many copies were made. We’re late to the party and this is sold out in the US and Europe. If you want this slice of 90’s pop-punk perfection, the only place you can still get it is Artist First Australia.

Also from Fat: a new pressing of Dillinger Four‘s Situationist Comedy, I would assume in honor of its 20th Anniversary, though they don’t market it as such. Anywho, this has been out of print for a while, so good news for anyone who’s been wanting it. Head over to their webstore to get your hands on this one.

Leatherface‘s 1993 LP Minx is being reissued on red vinyl. If you reside in the UK, this is probably the cheapest place to get this record. Americans can save about 20 bucks by grabbing it from Amazon.

No Idea Records has repressed A Wilhelm Scream‘s Partycrasher on “kaleidoscope colored vinyl” (whatever the fuck that means). They made 150 copies, each one is unique. This is a great album. Get your copy here.

A bunch of Rancid records are back in print on vinyl for the first time in a while. This includes both of their self-titled albums, …And Out Come the Wolves, Life Won’t Wait, and Indestructible. Oakland’s own 1-2-3-4 Go! Records has all of these in stock and your order ships for free if it’s over $75. So if you wanna grab a few of these, head on over to their webstore.

California melodic punks Craig’s Brother have announced their first new album in 11 years. Easily Won, Rarely Deserved is due out in November on People of Punk Rock Records. Pre-order the record here. The first single will premiere next week, for now you can listen to the band’s latest EP below.

Now that all the new releases and reissues have been covered, here’s what I’ve been listening to! My awesome mom got me a bunch of records for my birthday – The Adolescents‘ self-titled album, The FlatlinersInviting Light (I wasn’t crazy about this record when it first came out, but I’ve listened to it about three times now and I’m really enjoying it), the latest from Joey Cape and Face to Face, and Millencolin‘s True Brew. I also finally got the Walmart Exclusive(!!!) pressings of Green Day‘s American Idiot and International Superhits I ordered a few months ago. I’m still debating whether I want that new blue variant of Dookie.

And that’s all, folks! Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs. See ya next week!

Dying Scene Record Radar: This week in punk vinyl (MxPx, Transplants, Frenzal Rhomb & more)

Hello, and welcome to the latest installment of the Dying Scene Record Radar! If it’s your first time joining us, thank you! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl. So kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, grab a few beers, and break out those wallets, because it’s […]

Hello, and welcome to the latest installment of the Dying Scene Record Radar! If it’s your first time joining us, thank you! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl. So kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, grab a few beers, and break out those wallets, because it’s time to run through this week’s new releases and reissues (and there are a lot of them). Let’s get into it!

If you missed out on the full discography box set MxPx released last year, good news! The Bremerton pop-punk veterans are releasing standalone reissues for three albums – Life in General, Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo, and The Ever Passing Moment. There are three variants for each record, and these will be available on the band’s webstore Friday, November 4th at 10AM Pacific / 1PM Eastern time.

The Transplants‘ self-titled debut album turns 20 this year, so naturally it’s getting reissued. There are two variants, each limited to 1,000 copies. The US exclusive version is available here, and the European variant can be bought here. Garnier Fructis shampoo not included.

If you completely lack self control and are collecting every color variant of the new Flatliners record for some reason, I have some good (or bad) news for you! A new “lava” colored pressing has popped up, and this is the only place you can get it.

Almost 20 years after its initial release on compact disc (otherwise known as “CD” by us in the trade), Frenzal Rhomb‘s Sans Souci is getting its vinyl cherry popped. This is only being released in Australia on “Russell Crowe Shit Brown” colored vinyl. Grab it here and use code “FIRST10” at checkout to save 10% on your order.

Fat Wreck Chords has signed a new band from the UK called The Meffs – no, not The Muffs; The Meffs – and they have a 10″ EP coming soon. Check out the first single below, and grab the record here.

New pressings of three Dwarves records have popped up on Jeff Bezos’ Amazon.com. Thank Heaven for Little Girls, Sugarfix, and Blood, Guts & Pussy are all available to pre-order right now. Get on it!

Two titans of pop-punk DeeCracks and The Manges have announced a new split 7″, due out on December 2nd. It’s not available to pre-order yet, but Mom’s Basement Records will be handling the US release, and our European friends can get it from Striped Music.

And because one pop-punk split simply wasn’t enough, here’s another one from The Huntingtons and Travoltas! This 8-song split LP is also due out on December 2nd, and it’s available to pre-order right now here (US) and here (EU). There’s also a CD version that you can grab here.

Now that we got all that pesky new music out of the way, let’s get back to the reissues of old shit! Here’s one from Alkaline Trio: it’s a new pressing of their 2011 acoustic album Damnesia. Limited to 750 copies on red and white marble colored vinyl, this is only available at Newbury Comics.

Smartpunk recently announced an exclusive reissue of Yellowcard‘s 2006 album Lights and Sounds. It was pretty limited, and inevitably sold out within minutes, so they’re doing a second run on another color variant. Grab it here. Or don’t.

And finally we have British punk legends The Damned have a new live album arriving just in time for Halloween. The 2xLP titled A Night of a Thousand Vampires was recorded live in London in 2019. Links to pre-order the different color variants can be found here.

RECORD OF THE WEEK!

We here at Dying Scene are all about trying new things, so this week I’m challenging you, loyal reader, to listen to something new! Or, in this case, something kinda old that is likely new to you! This week’s Record of the Week comes from NorCal skate punks Symphony of Distraction. I’ve been listening to their 2018 album Horse on repeat for a week now. If you like fast shit, this is the right band for you! Give it a listen below, and buy the record here. Check out their new album Horseshit as well!
