Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by our friends at Punk Rock Radar:

Less Than Jake‘s got a new 7″ coming out September 1st on Pure Noise Records. It features the band’s two new singles “Broken Words” and “Walking Pipebomb”. The only way you can get the “Easter Yellow w/ Heavy Black Splatter” colored 7″ right now is in a $35 bundle with a T-shirt ($36-37 for my fellow girthy boys and girls). This is likely the first of many new 7″s to come from LTJ. Get it here.

Fat Wreck’s 25th Anniversary series rolls on with Me First and the Gimme GimmesAre a Drag! Bad news: This has already sold out on Fat Wreck’s US store. Good news: It’s still in stock on their UK store! So I guess if you missed out, suck it up and take it up the ass on that shipping. Or perhaps you’re Bri’ish and you’ll save on shipping!

Speaking of the British, our mates at Brassneck Records have a bunch of cool new releases out now and/or coming soon. Up first is the a new LP from Orlando, FL power-pop-punk band Vicious Dreams! Turn Off My Brain comes out next Friday, August 9th, and is available on three color variants (and black vinyl) from Brassneck in the UK, and Swamp Cabbage, Dirt Cult, and GC Records in the US of A. Also noteworthy, this is the cheapest record I’ve seen in like 10 years. $12 for an LP!!! How the fuck? Don’t sleep on this one.

Also out now on Brassneck Records: two new 7″s! The first of which is the bad ass debut EP from Nottingham, UK punk band Reduced (members of TV Crime, Scene Killers, The Hip Priests, etc.). I could type paragraphs upon paragraphs trying to convince you to buy this, but I’ll save my breath and tell you to just listen to the thing. I guarantee halfway through the first song you’ll be clicking Add to Cart on the Brassneck store. This shit is great, by far my favorite release of the year so far.

The pride of Dayton, Ohio, The Raging Nathans are celebrating their debut album Losing It’s 10th birthday with a big time reissue. Recess Records has and exclusive translucent orange color variant, while Rad Girlfriend has their own uranium glass variant (as well as black vinyl). Other things of note: the cover art is new and improved! This has been out of print since 2014! PagMan.

It truly wouldn’t be the Record Radar without at least one NOFX record, and on tap this week is the 10 millionth Punk in Drublic. I believe is the first to bear the “30th Anniversary” branding, however. The NOFX merch store doesn’t list a color variant but this looks like it’s the “Beer White Black Splatter” variant from their Brooklyn pop-up store a few weeks ago. Get it here. Also shoutout to NOFX for charging $12 to ship a single record. Keep on keeping punk rock elite!

It also wouldn’t be the Record Radar without one or two new records from the friendly people at Mom’s Basement Records. We’ve got a few this week, and they’re good ones! First up is the long awaited reissue of The Jasons‘ debut album Get Fucked, back in print for the first time since 2017 and very soon to be out of print once again. There were five variants to choose from, but now your choices are down to red vinyl and black wax. These are selling fast; get yours here.

Next up from Mom’s Basement: A brand new split 7″ from The Jasons and Italy’s Ratbones! Blitzkrieg Blasphemy features 2 tracks from each band and it, too, is available on 5 color variants limited to 100 copies each. Buy it with your money here.

Beloved Italian punk festival Punk Rock Raduno‘s new compilation LP Punk Rock Raduno Vol. 7 features 28(!) songs from awesome bands like 7 Years Bad Luck, Mean Jeans, Jagger Holly, The Zatopeks, The Odorants, and many others! There are 500 copies on black vinyl and you can get it from Mom’s Basement in the US, Punk Rock Raduno and Radiation Records in Italy, Monster Zero in Austria, and Stardumb Records in the Netherlands. It probably would have been easier to tell you all the places you can’t get this record.

Atlanta street punk band Rotten Stitches‘ new record Above the Ashes is out now on Charged Records. You can get it on the very pleasantly named “Punk Puke Splatter” (330 copies) or “Panama Canal Splatter” colored vinyl (170 copies) right here. Also available in Europe from Voltage Records. Recommended if you like The Casualties, The Exploited, Total Chaos, etc.

The Dopamines will be releasing their new album 80/20 soon on Rad Girlfriend Records (US), Bearded Punk Records (EU) and Brassneck Records (UK). Pre-orders begin this coming Friday, August 9th, with four color variants to choose from, along with black vinyl and 50 test press copies. This will be their first new record in 7 years!

Sum 41 finds their way back onto the Record Radar yet again with some snazzy new color variants of 2016’s 13 Voices and their latest and final record Heaven :x: Hell. Each of these is limited to 500 copies on “100% Eco-Friendly, zero-impact, carbon-neutral” vinyl; you can get both of them from Rude Records.

And New Found Glory is following Sum 41’s lead with new color variants for 2020’s Forever & Ever x Infinity (neon yellow / 1,000 copies / get it here) and their 2004 kinda-sorta-ish fan favorite Catalyst. The latter is limited to 1,000 copies on Baby Blue/Sea Blue/Highlighter and will be available exclusively on The Catalyst 20 Years Later Tour.

Revelation Records is reissuing Sick of it All‘s self-titled debut 7″ as a benefit to frontman Lou Koller, who was recently diagnosed with cancer after a tumor was discovered in his esophagus. Pre-orders will be open through August 14th and they’ll be pressing as many copies as there are orders for this purple 7″, with all proceeds helping Lou in his fight against cancer. You can get the 7″ here.

And we’re keeping it sooper hardcore with this new live record from Counterparts. Live in Toronto was recorded in, well, Toronto in 2022 and it’s available on four quite wordily named color variants. These include: Oxblood Glitter (250 copies), Brown & Electric Blue with Heavy White & Oxblood Splatter (400 copies), Oxblood in Milky Clear with Heavy Brown & White Splatter (1,350 copies). All of those can be purchased right here. There’s also the Clear / Half Brown with Heavy Oxblood Splatter on Clear Side Only variant (holy fuck that’s a long one) which is exclusive to the band’s webstore.

Remember Simple Plan? They’re reissuing all of their record on super duper not-so-limited colored vinyl (in fact, I believe this is the first time quite a few of these albums have been released on vinyl). The standalone LPs are available on a slew of variants; there’s also a box set (which has its own exclusive color variants) and even more exclusive splatter variants exclusive to Alternative Press. I’m (not) just a kid and (I presume) life (as a Simple Plan superfan who has an insatiable urge to buy every variant of these records) is a nightmare!

Well, that’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave us a comment below, or send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next time!

Wanna catch up on all of our Record Radar posts? Click here and you’ll be taken to a page with all the past entries in the column. Magic!

DS Show Review & Gallery: Save Ferris w/Burn Rebuild, Blood People, and Bumsy and the Moochers – Chicago (07.25.2024)

One of the third-wave ska’s stars, Save Ferris, out of Southern CA, hit Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago. Lending support was a trio of Chicago area bands: Burn Rebuild, and Blood People from the city, and Bumsy and the Moochers from the Chicago suburbs.

Grammy winning ska outfit Save Ferris takes its name from an iconic Chicago set film, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,”

The band showcased its latest single “Lights Out in the Reptile House.” The tune was released less than a week before. It tore through “What You See Is What You Get,” “Turn It Up,” and “Spam,” as well.

Save Ferris also performed a couple of covers, Dead Kennedys, “Too Drunk to Fuck,” and “Come On Eileen.” The band is particularly well-known for performing its version of that latter tune originally recorded by Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

Monique Powell, with her blazing red hair and fierce vocals, is a dynamic frontwoman. Powell, who has lent her vocal prowess to many groups, including No Doubt, Goldfinger, and Foxy Shazam, among many others, is a marvel to watch. Witnessing her move on stage it’s hard to believe that just under a decade ago she underwent high-risk surgery to repair a broken neck.

Powell and her terrifically talented bandmates topped off a fun weekday evening on the near southside of Chicago.

Save Ferris continues with its summer tour. Check its upcoming dates here.

Burn Rebuild played an entertaining set, roaring through “Monsters,” “Skin And Blood,” “Therapy,” “The Beginning,” and  “Save The Date,” among others.

Reggie’s has been a main spot for the band and this show was special. Per lead singer and bassist Frank Tsoukalas [he fills the same roles for Much The Same]:

We’re really grateful to Brendan [Joyce, booking for Reggie’s] and the whole crew there for always giving us a place to play. As I said at the show, it was also the first time I played a show with other bands where the majority were fronted by women, and it’s nice to see that more and more.

Tsoukalas also revealed what Burn Rebuild will be up to in the near future,

We have plans to record in August and hopefully release 2-3 songs by September. We also have two shows coming up in October. One at Tivoli Bowl the 5th with Take The Reins and the 26th with The Hallow at The Irish Legend.

If you get an opportunity to check out this band, I’d advise you to take advantage of it.

Blood People blasted through a robust set including “Phantasmagoria,” “Recluse,” “Teeth Thief,” and “Shapeshifter,” among others. The band describes its music as heavy punk. It’s a fitting description. The muscular performance was a complement to the other band on this bill. I’ll be on the lookout to catch them again and you should be as well. Hopefully sooner than later.

Bumsy and the Moochers, from the Chicago burbs, was the first of the ska bookends on this night. The rollicking set included, “Stupid Habits,” “IOWA,” “Hey Margarita,” “Rewind 99,” and “Cathy Anne.” When you see Bumsy and the Moochers in the bill you know you are in for a blast of a time. A multi-horns blast at that.

For singer Caitlin Edwards, there was a cinematically special connection to the headliner, but not the film related to its name.

I loved how they were in 10 Things I Hate About You. That scene was iconic.

Edwards added:

We used to cover their version of “Come on Eileen” in the early Bumsy days. We’ve never shared the stage with them before, but they always been an influence of ours especially in our early days of being a band. They’re a staple in 90s ska for sure.

Bumsy and the Moochers recently was in the recording studio. The group can next be seen at Punk Rock Paradise 2 on August 17. They also have a Cobra Lounge show on September 29, followed The band is also participating in a domestic violence awareness show in October, in honor of a friend of the band All the proceeds are going to Guardian Angel Community Services in Joliet, IL. Oh, and a little event known as Fest 22 on October 26.

If that was not enough, Bumsy and the Moochers has a 7-inch vinyl coming out soon. There are two new songs plus a digital download bonus track. It will be released by Sell the Heart Records.

Thanks & Cheers!

Lawrence Fletcher founded Motoblot, the motorcycle rally and music fest in Chicago. The three-day festival melds music, motorcycles, and a nod to the 1950s. Professionally, Fletcher works in Marketing and Events for Royal Enfield. Royal Enfield began production in 1901in Redditch, England, and is the oldest continuously manufactured global motorcycle company.

I caught up with Fletcher during and after the festival as he reflected on how his passion for motorcycles and love of punk converged to create Motoblot.

Mer Gold: Let’s start with the basics. Where are you from if not from Chicago? When did you come to the city?

Lawrence Fletcher: I am from Germantown, Wisconsin, just North of Milwaukee. I moved to Chicago in 1984.

How did you get into motorcycles and what do they do for you?

I rode motorcycles growing up in Wisconsin. I started on Mini Bikes and Dirt Bikes on trails around my house in Germantown. “On Any Sunday” came out in the Summer of “71” and was definitely a big influence on me.

I know it is a cliche, but it has always about freedom, when I was young, and it still gives me that feeling today.

(Pictured: Lawrence Fletcher, L, and Kevin Dunworth, Motoblot MC)

How and when did you decide to start Motoblot?

Motoblot basically evolved from an event called Mods vs Rockers Chicago which started in 2005 on Lincoln Avenue in front of Delilah’s. It began as a Motorcycle and Scooter show where like-minded enthusiasts gathered to salute the rival youth cultures of early 60’s England. The event steadily grew over the years and we basically outgrew being a renegade street party. In 2014 we rebranded as MOTOBLOT to be more inclusive of all things Moto and I teamed up with the legendary Sean McKeough and brought the fest to Fulton Street and Cobra Lounge. This year’s MOTOBLOT was the 20th anniversary of the first Mods vs Rockers Chicago.

Where does the name of the festival come from?

BLOT” is a Norse/Pagan word which loosely translated means “a Gathering with Sacrifice”. I borrowed Blot from my friends in the Ton Up Club London who host a WINTERBLOT every January.

What was your original vision for it and has it changed since the first festival?

The early years, we were just hosting your basic Motorcycle and Hot Rod Show and we slowly added more vendors and bands and it really evolved into a lifestyle event where the music and fashion are as big a part of the festivities as the machines.

Was Miss Motoblot and a nod to the 50’s always part of it?

Yes, the Pin-Up contest has always been a nod to the 40’s & 50’s… and we also consciously knew we needed to reach a wider audience and attract more female attendees. The Pin-Up contest has always brought a bit of color and glamour to the festival. It wouldn’t be MOTOBLOT without it!

(This year’s crowned Miss Motoblot is Carla Panico.)

Music-related, many punk and punk sub-genre bands are always on the schedule. Does that reflect your own musical tastes?

Punk is in my DNA. I was a teenager when Punk broke in the mid seventies and it was the soundtrack of my High School years. I always strive to book the best Punk, Psychobilly, Country Punk and other sub-genre bands that I think our moto-community will enjoy.

(Dozer also won the Valhalla Custom Motorcycle Show. As a trophy, Dozer was awarded the GUNGNIR (The spear of Odin) forged by Marcin Matlakowski.)

Why do you think punk music and motorcycles go so well together?

Punk music and motorcycles are both inherently rebellious, Punk rockers, hot rodders and bikers share similar tastes in music, fashion and attitude. It is what makes Motoblot a unique festival.

Dream bands to play Motoblot?

Social Distortion has always been on my mind.

This year, Rick Dozer, an extra in the acclaimed film The Bikeriders was at Motoblot. How cool was that?  Another cool coincidence was that the movie about a Chicago motorcycle club opened the weekend of Motoblot.

It was an awesome coincidence. The Bikeriders book has always been highly regarded in the motorcycle community. The photojournalist/author, Danny Lyon is legend, and his book perfectly captured a unique moment in motorcycle culture.

Funny story, When I first heard that the movie was opening Motoblot weekend, I originally contacted the Music Box Theater to try and set up a screening. I was speaking to Rebecca, a very nice woman who works in events and programming at the theater.

We were having a conversation about a potential Bikeriders screening and she drops “Danny Lyon” is my Dad”… I said “WHAT!” I was blown away that I was talking directly to his daughter. The Bikeriders screening didn’t work out with The Music Box so we set up the “Quadrophenia” screening in honor of the 20th Anniversary of Mods vs Rockers Chicago. Later, I was contacted by the studio behind The Bikeriders and I was also able to work with them on a Chicago screening of the film during Motoblot week. It made for a fantastic kick-start to the festivities!

(Pictured L- R: Builder Josh Longfellow/Gashawk Customs, Kevin Dunworth (Motoblot MC and Valhalla Coordinator) Rick Dozer (Valhalla Winner), Lawrence Fletcher, Brett Conway of Torc Helmets (Valhalla co-sponsor), and Marcin Matlakowski.)

Back to your love of riding motocycles. Your favorite rides and destinations?

I am very lucky that I am able to ride motorcycles for a living. My job with Royal Enfield takes me all over North America doing demo events and marketing rides. Every corner of the country has great and unique riding opportunities. From California’s Pacific Coast Highway to the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina / Virginia and everywhere in between.

Do you prefer riding solo or in groups? How do they differ and what does each do for you?

Nothing is better than riding in a group with your friends, that feeling is actually very well depicted in a scene in The Bikeriders.

Were you ever part or are you a part of a motorcycle club?

I started a Chicago chapter of the Ton Up Club back in 2005 with a few of my friends and it has grown to 30 plus members. The Ton Up Club is an international enthusiast club inspired by the Rocker era of 1960s England and the motorcycles of that era.

What bikes do you own and how often do you ride?

Like most of my friends, I have a garage full of motorcycles and projects. My favorite bike is a 1960’s era Triton, a London-built custom cafe racer that features a Triumph 650 motor in a Norton frame. It is considered a Unicorn in Rocker culture.

You have family in the Motobot biz as well correct? Your daughter?

Motoblot is definitely a family business. I couldn’t do it without the help and support of my wife [Marya Fletcher] and daughter [Tenley Fletcher]… and they put up with me and my obsession to host a great fest and the 365 days I spend planning for next year.

Finally, Other than The Bikeriders, what do you believe are some of the best films, about motorcycle riders/culture?

The obvious classics are The Wild Ones, Easy Rider, and On Any Sunday. The Wild One, in particular, inspired all of motorcycle culture that came after it. One gem that has always been below the radar is The Loveless (1981) directed by Katherine Bigelow and starring Willem Dafoe. Check it out if you can find it.

The annual Motoblot weekend is not the only motorcycle and music-related event Fletcher organizes. He also organizes Motorcycle Mondays, a monthly event, at O’Donovan’s; Pints & Pistons, a monthly event, at Montrose Saloon… and Hexe Moto, once a month at Hexe Coffee. He also is working on a Motoblot Holiday Party on December 13th at Cobra Lounge. Bands have not been announced but he has confirmed Hillbilly Casino and The Rumours. You can find the schedule of upcoming events here.

Thanks Lawrence! We’ll see you at Motoblot 2025. Cheers!

On 17 July 2024, punk rock supergroup OFF! screened the world premiere of their psychedelic, punk rock sci-fi film Free LSD at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre. Unlike their sold-out show at Lincoln Hall on 18 July 2024, there were only about 85 attendees in the cinema’s largest room which seats 750. It’s unclear why so few showed up for the movie’s opening night, but they clearly missed out! Much like the band’s existence, the film developed into a trippy, chaotic explosive climax!

David B Anthony, Fulbright, Debo, Coats, and Morris at the premiere of OFF!’s FREE LSD.

The film’s website explains that Keith Morris takes an experimental drug to remedy his erectile dysfunction to satisfy a younger woman, which opened the gate to a parallel universe in which he’s the singer for Off! and the target of an AI species dead set on preventing the band from recording a new album. Oh, and in addition to breaking boundaries with a new record, Off! are responsible for awakening human consciousness and saving the world!

“We had so many roadblocks and hurdles it was like there were points in time where we can’t do this.”

-Morris talks about making the film.

The film is a cinematic reimagining of the band’s formation and importance to the music community but it’s also a coming-of-age tale of four grown men – Keith Morris (vocals), Dimitri Coats (guitar), Autry Fulbright II (bass), and DH Peligro (drums) – escaping the doldrums and disappointments of their lives to achieve their full potential and save the world through the help of the Boner Doctor (David Yow of The Jesus Lizard) and his “antidote” (aka LSD). Like Clerks (1994) meets Altered States (1980) meets Repo Man (1984), this film is sure to become a “midnight movie” cult classic.

“It turned into a real deal midnight movie” – Coats

After the film, there was a short question and answer session led by local freelance writer David B. Anthony in which Morris, Coats, Fulbright, and actor Chelsea Debo (who plays Keith’s love interest, Cici) shared insights and anecdotes about the making of the film.

“Can you give the background of the film? When the did the idea spark and what of the initial premise is what we just saw on the screen tonight?”

-David B Anthony leading the Q&A.

Coats explained that the film was born out of the dissolution of Off!’s original lineup and previous film-making effort and that they made it because they were determined to do it and Morris declared that “we have to make the movie.”

“When I read a special script, I was like I have to do this movie and how can I make this happen, it’s just not my kind of music but I remember pulling every string to make it happen.”

-Debo expressing her interest in the role of Cici.

Morris explained that they overcame roadblocks and hurdles, including band lineup changes and financial woes, to make this film because they were “reaching for something…and each time we recorded an album, we set a bar for ourselves… and finally we set a bar we that probably won’t ever get to again but…we had to reach even higher to make the movie. And, for me, it’s like my proudest moment.” Fulbright added, “my only prerequisite was that I would get shot in the movie.”

Off! drummer at the time, Justin Brown, was unable to appear in the film due to other commitments, so longtime friend Peligro stepped in to complete their mission. The film is dedicated to their longtime friend and cast member, Peligro, who endured chemotherapy for lung cancer during the shooting of the film and later died in 2022 due to head trauma.

“My only prerequisite was that I would get shot in the movie.”

-Fulbright

Coats, the director, credits the team of veteran filmmakers, actors, and musicians with making it possible. And, “in all honesty, Christopher Raymond‘s beautiful cinematography coupled with Paul Buhl‘s and Jonathan P. Shaw‘s editing, makes the film actually worth viewing and spending time with” Coats states. It’s also worth noting that Coats’ directing shows he has a promising future in film, should he decide to continue down this path. The movie has a slow start but picks up and mixes scripted narrative and music performance to showcase the band and their potential to save all of us.

“I promise we will make the movie even if we have to shoot it on an iPhone”.

-Coats talking to Morris.

But if being an Off! fan is not enough to entice you to watch this film, then the cast of punk rock luminaries surely will! You’ll see Chris D. (The Flesh Eaters), Don Bolles (Germs), Davey Havok (AFI), Angelo Moore (Fishbone), DH Peligro (Dead Kennedys), David Yow (The Jesus Lizard), Rob Zabrecky (Possum Dixon), and Zander Schloss (Circle Jerks). Comedian and musician Jack Black also features in the movie, as he has in several of the band’s music videos.

If you’re a punk rock and midnight movie junkie, this film will get you Off!

Go see them as they continue their screening with Q&As through 7 August in California.

Music Box Theatre in Chicago hosted OFF!’s premier screening of FREE LSD.

On 12 July 2024, punk bands Pegboy, the Arrivals, Canadian Rifle, and Criminal Kids (all Chicago based) performed a sold out show at the legendary Metro in their own hometown. The venue was at capacity with over 1,000 punks and their explosive energy. Body surfers, circle pits, and extremely hot old punks endured the frenzy of this incredible show, so it was no surprise that the night ended with an ambulance leaving with someone from the venue. It was an experience worth seeing and surviving!

Pegboy is no stranger to Dying Scene. Their fans and friends packed the club with an angst-ridden atmosphere for the duration of the band’s killer set. Pegboy’s singer, Larry Damore, spent the majority of the night on the floor with fans as they went wild. The temperature couldn’t stop anyone from having a great night. Find them here next.

Scott Lucas of Local H joined Pegboy for a cover of Naked Raygun‘s “Treason” in tribute to both bands’ former bassist, Pierre Kezdy, who passed away in 2020. Damore announced that, from now on, “Treason” would be an official Pegboy song as Kezdy penned the tune and it’s a great one. Lucas stayed on guitar for Pegboy’s “Never a Question,” which was dedicated to Chicago’s own Steve Albini, who played bass on the recording of this song and passed away 7 May 2024.

The Arrivals played a great show and made an announcement of new material coming soon…so stay tuned here for future updates and shows.

Canadian Rifle played a killer set of high-energy punk and blasted through their set celebrating the genre and the scene. Be sure to find them here.

Opening band, Criminal Kids, started off the show with a bang and ran through a killer set of punk with an equal mix of 70’s New York punk n roll, California melodic skate punk, and whole lot of Chicago swagger. They delivered a brilliant rendition of the UndertonesTeenage Kicks. Find them here next.

Your correspondent does choose to cover multi-day festivals with hordes of bands way too often. Day two of this year’s Mosswood Meltdown continued the theme with blazing sun (if slightly cooler than the previous day) and another nine acts. However we did miss the first two, possibly because of attending an after-party the night before. We’re old! Go see our coverage of Day One of this amazing festival.

Die Spitz were the first band we caught on Day Two. This foursome of young women from Austin, TX have toured with Amyl and The Sniffers, played the party stage at Punk Rock Bowling and supported The Subhumans in Vegas. They continue to astonish.

Up next were Bush Tetras, a reunion of the New York No Wave band, formed in 1978.

Egyptian Lover is an American musician, vocalist, producer and DJ, and was a part of the L.A. dance music, electro, and rap scene in the early 1980s.

The Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes appeared with an all-teen backing band from The Paul Green Rock Academy in Woodstock, NY

Obviously your correspondent is no expert on hip-hop, although we can recognize talent when we see it. Big Freedia has bringing New Orleans ‘Bounce Music’ since 2011 and was highly entertaining.

Pure Hell started in Philadelphia in 1974, one of the first proto-punk bands of the ’70s, playing with The New York Dolls and, later, with Sid Vicious in 1978. Mosswood was their first West Coast show in 30 years.

The Mummies roared onto the stage on a motorcycle and carriage, which fairly fits their straight-up insanity. Recently interviewed in Creem Magazine they disclosed that they are working on a movie. God help us.

Australia has long been a breeding ground for excellent melodic punk and Adelaide’s LOLA are one of the latest in a long line of succession. If you’ve never heard of these guys before, their brand new single “Fast Life” (not to be confused with this bad ass bonus track from the undisputed greatest Bad Religion record The New America) is a good starting point.

The friendly cunts at DyingScene.com (that’s us! I’m speaking in third person!) just so happen to be exclusively premiering that very single! Quit fucking around and check that shit out below.

LOLA may be new to your ears (as they are to mine), but despite only being around a few years they’ve already got a nice little back catalog to work through. Hardcore punk supergroup OFF! played a short stint of farewell shows to promote their studio album and movie of the same name Free LSD. Stopping in Chicago, New York City, and still to come in Los Angeles, consider yourself lucky if you manage to attend one of these legendary shows. If not, do not fret, we got you covered. Check out our recap of their first stop in Chicago on July 18th at Lincoln Hall!

Chicago’s own moody art-rock band FACS stepped in to open the show after Shellac was originally slated on the bill. Those are not easy shoes to fill but FACS did an amazing job, even dedicating a song to Steve Albini.

According to their Sub Pop Records page, “Chicago band FACS was formed in 2017 by Brian Case, Noah Leger, and Jonathan van Herik, following the dissolution of their previous band Disappears. Informed by stark rhythms, space, and minimal arrangements, the group has recorded five albums of dubby and dreamy art rock through the lens of 21st century Chicago. Named after the catalog numbering system for Factory Records, with a nod to present day facial action coding systems, FACS marries the energy and ideas immediately following the disintegration of punk with the uncertainty and tension of the modern world.”

Before OFF! starts, Keith Morris enters the stage, taping up a mile-long set list that could have been written on a CVS receipt. Great news for fans to see such a stacked set list.

Despite a rocky start with some guitar amp issues, attendees were unfazed and waited patiently while other band members played some jazzy music till everything was fixed. OFF! brought it right back from the start and it was like nothing ever happened.

A sea of people was constantly moshing, jumping, and enthralled to be a part of this sold-out show. During breaks in their set Keith Morris did spoken word, talking about the political climate, the strange times we are in and Free LSD.

Besides the kick-ass album we get an equally kick-ass movie. Now, I will not get into too much detail about it because we have some awesome Dying Sceners who are reviewing it, but here is a brief synopsis:

“Elderly sex shop owner, Keith, falls for a younger customer, but struggles with performance. Seeking help from a strange doctor, he discovers an experimental drug leading to renewed vitality and a journey into a parallel universe where he’s a rock star targeted by an advanced AI set on stopping his band’s album, crucial for human consciousness awakening.”

The punk rock comedic sci-fi movie is directed by OFF!’s Dimitri Coats and features performances by David Yow (Jesus Lizard), Davey Havok (AFI) and many others.

If you find yourself in California, you can see an advanced screening of Free LSD with a Q&A; you can also pre-order to stream on Apple TV.

Started in 2009 (as Burger Boogaloo) and renamed during the pandemic, Mosswood Meltdown is an annual festival of punk and related music held each 4th of July weekend in Mosswood Park in Oakland, CA The promoters, Total Trash Productions, Marc Ribak and Amy Carver book everything from local garage bands to famous headliners who have included Devo, Bikini Kill, Iggy Pop and The Damned.

This year brought us blazing sunshine and high temperatures, with much of the early arrivers camping out in the shade under trees during the day. This included your correspondent who ran frequently from the photo pit to a convenient tree until things cooled down.

Hot Laundry are friends of ours, so of course we were bitching about how early we had to get out to see them while they sound checked. Bay Area locals, they mix a sixties garage sound with a Detroit girl-group vibe.

Established in 2014, Los Angeles’ hardcore punks Trap Girl came up to NorCal with blistering feminist pink in handcrafted wigs. At one point, they brought on Lynn Breedlove from legendary San Francisco queercore band Tribe 8 for a song.

Wifey is a new project from former professional skater Cher Strauberry, who was formerly in Oakland punk band Twompsax from 2018 to 2023.

Go Sailor were a Lookout Records pop-punk band who released an album and some singles in 1996. The original lineup came back for Mosswood in 2024.

Founded in 1991, Pansy Division have been playing power pop and pop punk with queer themes ever since, touring with bands like Rancid and Green Day and inching towards their target of 1000 shows.

Hunx and his Punx were founded in San Francisco in 2008 playing a mix of bubblegum and punk. The band now includes Shannon Shaw of Shannon & The Clams.

There’s not much more you can say about legendary punks Redd Kross, but they were having such fun up there.

Wrapping up Day One were The B-52s, sounding as good or better than anyone else on the bill

See Instagram galleries of all the bands from Day One below. Day Two is coming soon!

NOFX‘s original 7″ Of The Month Club from 2005 is being reissued on colored vinyl. The full set of 12 is available to pre-order now and will ship in October. It’ll run you 120 freedom dollars. Get yours here.

Also available from Fat Wreck Chords: a new record from The Last Gang! Obscene Daydreams is due out September 20th. Check out the new single “Madness” below and add the record to your cart before checking out with your NOFX 7″s.

Punk veterans Ann Beretta are releasing a live album, recorded at their final show at Richmond Music Hall in their hometown Richmond, VA last June. This is limited to 200 copies on “hand poured” “whisper red” “colored vinyl”. Don’t think about what any of that means, just send your money here.

Back in April, yours truly gave you – the loyal readers of the Dying Scene Record Radar – the inside scoop on Against All Authority’s yuge reissue of 24 Hour Roadside Resistance (that already-announced red w/ black splatter color variant is still available btw – get it here). There’s been a new development, however! Smartpunk Records now has their own exclusive variant on white w/ black splatter colored vinyl. It’s limited to 300 hand numbered copies and you can get it here.

The almighty Slackers have a lot of cool stuff going on, as they’ve announced the first-ever vinyl reissue of their 2003 album Close My Eyes. This has been out of print for over 20 years, but thanks to Pirates Press you can now get it on “Port Marble” colored vinyl, or black vinyl if you’re more into that kinda thing. Both are available here and cost the same amount of money.

The other cool thing the Slackers have going on: a new 12″ single featuring two brand new songs “What We Gonna Do Now?” and “Pick and Choose”. This is on black wax with a pretty cool printed B-Side. Get it here.

Here’s a new record from a band I’d never heard of before – Bewitcher! These guys have been around since at least 2016 (that’s when their first record came out), but their new record Spell Shock is my introduction to the band. It was produced by Rancid‘s Lars Frederiksen and is due out September 27th. You can get it on black wax in the US and lilac (purple) colored vinyl in Europe; they’ll have a tour exclusive orange color variant on their upcoming US tour with Skeletal Remains. The first few singles are pretty bad ass – this one reminds me a lil bit of Motörhead:

In a surprising turn of events, Clown Sounds has released a new record! Par For The Curse is out now on Recess Records and you can purchase it on opaque purple colored vinyl (limited to 300 copies) right here. For the unimitated, Clown Sounds is fronted by Todd Congelliere (FYP, Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad to Candyland, etc.), who is backed up by Jacob Gaxiola (guitar, Killer Dreamer), Isaac Thotz (bass, The Arrivals), Jimmy Felix (drums, Toys That Kill) and Trevor Rounesville (also drums, Underground Railroad to Candyland). This is a bad ass record by the way! Highly recommended pickup.

This one’s a contender for my Album of the Year and it’s not even a full-length album! It’s the new 5-song EP from North Carolina punk supergroup Evening Shadows (members of Strike Anywhere, Valient Thorr, and more). If you like 90’s pop-punk this is a must-pickup – check it out below and grab the 10″ EP (limited to 300 copies on blue colored vinyl) from the friendly people at Eccentric Pop for the low price of $13.

The Dance Hall Crashers’ 1995 album Lockjaw is being reissued in honor of its 30th 29 & 1/2 Year Anniversary! It’s a Double LP set with a ton of demos, including two tracks that seem to have never been released – “American Dream” and “Footsteps”. It comes in a gatefold jacket with a bunch of flyers and photos curated by the band. Get it here.

Keeping with the theme of “Double LP reissues of a sophomore record from the 90’s”, we’ve got the new 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of The Get Up Kids’ Something to Write Home About. The album has been remastered and, like the DHC record, the 2nd LP is full of demos and rarities. There are at least 5 variants of this to choose from; you can find links to purchase any and/or all of them right here. The band will be playing the album in full on their upcoming US Tour with the Smoking Popes as well.

How ’bout some new-ish music? Canadian melodic punk band The Corps released their new album Fractured Protocol digitally back in May and now Thousand Islands Records is releasing it on translucent blue colored vinyl. Go here to get the record for $19.99 – or get a bundle with the CD for just $3 more! They’ve got test pressings for $29.99 as well. Shoutout to Thousand Islands for always keeping it real.

New Jersey hardcore punk band School Drugs have repressed their 2018 debut 7″ Relative Suffering on 200 copies of transparent gold colored vinyl. Quick fucking around and get that shit here.

New records have landed in the Punk Rock Radar superstore! Behold! The might of European skate punk is on full display with Finnish melodic punk band Bucket’s new album Abandon Paradise! Also the latest album from Danish skate punk band Uphill Struggle, Tall Tales and Low Blows! Also still available: the PRR Birthday Box featuring three (not two, three!!) awesome records, a t-shirt, stickers, and the opportunity to pick the topic of a Punk Rock Radar Youtube video. All of the and more available right here, right now.

Red Scare‘s 20th Anniversary compilation features new songs by The Menzingers, Laura Jane Grace, Dead To Me (holy fuck!!), The Falcon, Cobra Skulls (holy fuck!!!!), No Trigger, Sludgeworth, The Bollweevils, and more. In fact, all 17 tracks on 20 Years of Dreaming and Scheming are brand new, unreleased material from the contributing band. That’s huge! What are you waiting for? Buy that shit!

Speaking of cool-ass compilations, this one might be the coolest of them all. Master of Trumpets! The Suicide Machines, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Dissidente, Hans Gruber & The Diehards, Sonic Boom Six and more team up to cover a bunch of metal songs with a lil ska flair. Sound good? Get it here on that sweet looking gold and black splatter colored vinyl.

Austrian melodic punks You Know?! have released their brand new record Post Utopia on SBÄM Records. Nearly 10 years in the making, the band began writing this record in 2015. It’s available on three color variants – each limited to 100 copies – on SBÄM’s European store. No clue if this will be popping up on any of their North American webstores anytime soon.
