I love this job. Doing write-ups for hard-working bands is an incredibly satisfying thing. The amount of unheard of, yet absolutely fantastic bands out there is truly unfathomable… but you’re a punk rocker, so surely you can already understand the importance of these bands, the music they make, and the amount of positivity that punk rock has contributed to each one of our lives. (Think you’re pretty up-to-date on all your scene-head knowledge? Why not take a look through our Dying Scene band profiles and see for yourself?)

(Unfathomable…)

That being said, it’s always a thrill when something really cool and genuine comes traipsing through the door… a figurative door, I mean. (And figurative traipsing.) Actually word came to me via e-mail that legendary Dutch punk band I Against I, notorious for their two-album stint with Epitaph, and inclusion on Epitaph compilations Punk-O-Rama Vol. 3, and Punk-O-Rama Vol. 5, is releasing a new album, their first in 13 years.

Small Waves is set to drop on Friday, October 5, 2018 on White Russian Records, (Tasty!) and if you can’t get excited about the first ever European band to sign with Epitaph (Did I not mention that already?) coming out of retirement to put out some new tunes and get back out on the road, then, as we say in my hometown, Dallas, TX, “Partner, I don’t know what’s wrong with you.”

I’m going to go ahead and compare this album to the latest Descendents release, where these guys are older and wiser, but still ready to fuckin’ party! “Of course, our lives are totally different now from when we just started,” illuminates bass player Bob Hoorweg. “Back then we were kids. Now we have kids of our own, and jobs, and mortgages… and station wagons.” Singer/guitarist, Ronald van Maren adds, “Because our lives have changed so much, we now feel the need to play music as an outlet more than ever before.”

The band’s drummer Jasper Blazer (who has the coolest name ever, BTW) goes on, “That’s why we now play with an intensity that wasn’t always there in the past, but what’s really priceless is the fact that after all these years we are still the best of friends. Still searching for that perfect song. That’s worth more to us than any of our past achievements,” and it’s statements like that that really make this band appeal to me. ”We feel that our best work is yet to come, otherwise we would never have climbed on stage again. We’re really excited to play our new songs live,” and Dying Scene has them early, of course. Stream the new album, Small Waves, below.
