Social Distortion’s Mike Ness talks new album, studio plans

In a recent interview, Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness stated that, in the next six-to-nine months, the band will begin pre-production and the recording process of their long-awaited new album, due for release sometime next year. He explains:

“Once this tour ends, we’ll spend six to nine months in pre-production. Then we’ll record the album. I’ll do some reference recordings at our studio, but they’ll be pretty crude. For arrangements and experimenting with stuff, the recordings don’t need to be high-quality.”

Mike also explained why the band takes a long time to make records, “Journalists will say, ‘It’s been seven years since your last record.’ But it didn’t take seven years to write the record. It probably took seven years to wind down from five years of touring. And I have a family, I have responsibilities. Sometimes I need five years to live life, so I have stuff to write about. Sometimes I don’t pick up a guitar for six months, but when I do pick it up, the past six months pour out of me.”

He was also asked if it’s too early to offer a preview of the new record, and his response was, “There are things about Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes I want to keep, but the next album may have more of a garage feel to it. I want it to have a little bit more high energy. And for this new record, unfortunately, I feel like I have to write the album of my career. There’s going to be a lot of thought put into it.”

Social Distortion’s recent album, Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, was released in 2011. That was the band’s first release on Epitaph Records, and their first studio album since 2004’s Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll.

San Jose, Costa Rica skate punks Carrusel are now streaming their new EP, “Posterity Now!”

According to drummer Benjamin Gerry, the EP is “a more mature EP due to it’s process which wasn’t as straightforward as the Departure Lounge. We wanted to make the riffs tighter; keeping the same line with the lyrics, but without losing the quick and aggressive style that characterizes us. The art was pretty different since we worked all together in the collage with old magazines; it was fun. It also has an emotive aspect as it came out just a year after the first EP and it motivates us to keep on making new music and have a good time.”

The EP is a follow up to their first EP, the Departure Lounge.

Check out “Posterity Now!” below.

Ottawa pop-punks We Were Sharks are taking full advantage of “Shark Week” to let you know they will be reissuing their debut EP, Not a Chance, as an LP through Panic State Records. The release will feature 2 new tracks including an acoustic version of their song “Bridge Burner” which you can listen to below.

Singer Randy Frobel had this to say about the song’s meaning:

“I wrote Bridge Burner about a person who came into my life who I thought I was a friend. Soon after, I found out I was just a stepping stone to help that person get to where they thought they need to be. I had heard lots of stories about this person beforehand but chose not to believe them. There is always two sides to the story and I felt that you should give someone a chance first. Boy was I wrong.

It wasn’t long after that everything started to change. I started seeing and hearing about stuff this person had said and stuff this person had done. Their whole personality had changed. It was all about them. They didn’t care about anyone else. Before I knew it, they were on to someone else who they thought could help them even more. As we sat down to start writing for “Not A Chance” I knew this was something that had to be addressed. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who’s experienced this. I wanted to write an anthem for all those people who have been stabbed in the back. Who have been used and taken advantage of.”

Pre-order the “Not A Chance” LP here.
