Today, we are pleased to debut the new song by The Silver Snails! It's an Elliott smith cover! The Silver Snails are the husband and wife duo Lucas Ward and Elisa Fantini and they make music that draws from gauzy space of early psyche-rock. We're talking Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, Twink, and The Pretty Things. Their second album, Speed of Light is out September 7 and it includes a space-folksy take on Smith. In fact, Smith and the band had a personal connection. The band's Lucas Ward says: "Elliott Smith and I met in High School and he inspired me to become a songwriter. Pretty (Ugly Before) is my favorite song by him. Not only are the melody, chords, and rhythm highly original, the lyrics bring me to tears. John Lennon said that a songwriter's job is to put feelings into music so that others can feel them too. Elliott was the best that I know at doing this, which is why his music continues to touch so many people. We hope you enjoy our cover of "Pretty (Ugly Before)" by Elliott Smith. "You can check out the new tune below.

Guitarist Kirk McGirk says, “Something that really bothers me with our world is how much the rich, powerful, and fortunate gaslight regular people like you and me that everything is ok, or that there’s nothing to see. Kind of that idea of someone pissing on your head and telling you it’s raining – some people have a vested interest in the larger us ignoring what our eyes see and what our instincts are telling us.”

Earlier this month Irish post-punks M(h)aol released their excellent second album Something Soft. Along with being the band’s first full-length release since becoming a trio, the album is also a celebration of experimentation which finds the band exploring a heavier, more urgent sound. The eleven tracks also showcase the band’s lyrical prowess as they tackle gender expectations (especially in music), talk about intersectional feminism, tear apart the soulless nature of consumerism, delve into digital life, and pay tribute to beloved pets. Something Soft is available everywhere now via Merge Records and TULLE. You can pick up a physical copy here or here. M(h)aol are currently touring Ireland with Cola and Junk Drawer. They will be touring Europe and the UK this fall. Through the power of the internet Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with vocalist and drummer Constance Keane, bassist and vocalist Jamie Hyland, and guitarist Sean Nolan to talk about the album, becoming a trio, pets, and so much more.
It’s the Year of Wet Leg, and none of us can stop it. A few weeks after releasing fresh-hell banger and unhinged SOTY contender “catch these fists,” which feels like something Elastica should have put out in the late-’90s, the Isle of Wight indie oddballs resurface this week (May 27) with a galloping love bop called “CPR.” It’s just the right amount of sleazy as it flashes some new wave vibes mixed with the band’s usual cocktail of post-punk and […]

Depending on who you ask, the meaning of Echezona’s new record Ényì changes. A fan of the Boston artist might immediately recognize the title as an abbreviation of his community-forward mantra, “every neighbor yields impact.” To someone who speaks Igbo, though — like some members of the city’s Nigerian community — it literally translates to “friend.” But no matter how you interpret it, the record is a stamp of Echezona’s M.O. as a musician. The Dorchester-raised Afrobeats and hip-hop act released […]
