DS Album Review – LA Crimes – “EP”

Los Angeles punk rock band LA Crimes packs a punch with its new EP. Los Angeles punk rock band LA Crimes packs a punch with its new EP. Boasting five songs in just over fifteen minutes, the band takes us through a journey of rough pasts, redemption, heartbreak, and death.

The first track, “Pirate’s Brawl,” is a fantastic opener. Fast with a jaunty little dip in the middle that still keeps its edge. If an opening song is supposed to be a thesis of an album, this song passes with flying colors. It puts everything on front street and lures you in for more. While the acoustic guitar in the opening bars of “Dark Side of the Road” threw me off a bit it ends up a nice addition to the song. These first two songs definitely keep that pirate theme, with their group background vocals that should be sung in a tavern after fifteen beers. It’s two drinking songs, but two different sides of the coin, one celebrating life and the other reckoning with sins committed. “Don’t Say Goodbye” describes a breakup no one wants but may be for the best. It’s heartbreaking but still keeps the punk rock. “Port to Port” jumps back into the album’s pirate theme with an analogy about learning how to act in different circles. The EP closes out strong with “R.I.P.

I like the redemptive positivity of this EP. There’s a lot of self-reflection in the lyrics, which is something that isn’t foreign to punk rock but has been more prevalent in many newer albums I’ve heard in the last year. However, just because feelings are at the forefront lyrically doesn’t mean this is a poppy album. Musically, this album kicks ass and leaves you a little tougher when you get to the other side of it. If there is more music on the way from LA Crimes, this EP is a good taste of what’s to come. LA Crimes has a gig at the Viper Room in Los Angeles coming up on February 15th, with portions of ticket and merch sales to be donated to local shelters and people affected by the recent fires in Los Angeles. 617 Q&A: Marty Friedman on ‘Dreaming Japanese’, alleged metal feuds, and Cap’n Crunch

Marty Friedman is an alien in a genre made up of outcasts. The guitarist moved to Japan 23 years ago, shortly after his decade-long stint with metal titans Megadeth came to an end. It was there that he found not so much a rebirth as a reinvention that saw an immersion into the Tokyo music scene and foreign environment that somehow led to various television undertakings, the latter making him a household name in the country. One was just as […]

This Show Is Tonight: Wallice seeks a proper court ‘Jester’ in Allston

Nearly four years — to the day — after we first hyped her striking Gen Z-minded single “23”, Wallice is rolling back into town to play Brighton Music Hall in Allston tonight (February 4). And the Los Angeles alt-pop artist will do so showing off her debut album in November’s The Jester. Before the ’24 holiday season swallowed us whole, we were treated to a standout single from the record in the fluttering and magnetic “Deadbeat,” where Wallice’s vocals jump to the front of human contact. Here’s […]

This Show Is Tonight: Jerry Cantrell brings ‘Blood’ to Boston

It’s pretty remarkable what kind of solo career Jerry Cantrell has weaved outside and alongside Alice In Chains (who, side note, may hold up better than any of the classic grunge bands of the early-’90s). We loved his 2021 album Brighten, which leaned into some Americana territory, and now the acclaimed songwriter takes gritty October album I Want Blood out on a North American tour that tonight (February 4) plays Boston’s Citizens House of Blues. And if it’s blood that Jerry Cantrell wants, then it is blood he […]

The V List: Five of our favorite homegrown tracks from January 2025

Editor’s Note: Anyone who says there isn’t good music coming out these days — and quite literally, every day — simply isn’t paying attention. Vanyaland’s compilation feature The V List highlights the best in new music, both homegrown and national, over the past month, pulling together the sounds that have soundtracked the website in recent weeks. It’s all the stuff we’re bumping here at Vanyaland HQ, one new bop at a time. Jordan Duffy, ‘Not Your Dream Girl’ Movie endings can often be so unrealistic that they feel […]

Sundance 2025: Josh O’Connor leads the warm and lovely ‘Rebuilding’

Editor’s Note: Vanyaland Film Editor Nick Johnston is back from Park City, Utah, where he covered the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, but the fun isn’t over just yet. Keep it locked to our full coverage of Sundance reviews from this year’s festival as they go live, and check out our full archives of past editions. There were few movies better suited to soothe the primarily Los Angeles-based Sundance audience than Max Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding, whose subject matter is tragically relevant to the circumstances that […]
