Mass Nerder was ALL’s first release on Epitaph, following their very brief yet tumultuous stint on major label Interscope Records. This is one of four studio albums featuring the band’s longest tenured singer Chad Price on vocals.

This record also features my favorite ALL song “I’ll Get There” (“Until I Say So” is a very close second). Go ahead and hop in a pop-punk time machine back to the Summer ’98 with this stone cold classic:

DS Record Radar: This Week in Punk Vinyl (Operation Ivy tribute, The Vandals, Bouncing Souls & more)

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold […]

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

We’re starting off this week’s column with a huuuuuge Operation Ivy tribute comp from Lavasocks Records and Sell The Heart Records. The Double LP titled Mooorree Than Just Another Comp features 33 Op Ivy covers from bands like The Chinkees, Catbite, Flying Racoon Suit & more. There are a bunch of color variants available here and here.

Earlier this week, your friends at Dying Scene hosted the exclusive premiere of a new song by North Carolina’s Wolves & Wolves & Wolves & Wolves. “Oh Catalonia” comes from the band’s upcoming album cursecursecurse, due out April 7th on A-F Records and Gunner Records. Check out the single below and pre-order the record here.

Belgian punks The Priceduifkes‘ new self-titled LP compiles 21 tracks from a bunch of previously released EPs and it actually flows pretty well as a full-length album. If you’ve never heard of these guys, this record is a perfect introduction to their high octane brand of pop-punk. Listen below and grab it on vinyl here (US) or here (EU).

Fat Wreck Chords imprint Bottles To The Ground put out a few new releases this week, the first of which is Bottle Music for Broken People. This sampler comp features a brand new track from the label’s newest signing Fishbone, along with songs by Codefendants, The Meffs & more. Check out the Fishbone single below and grab the LP here.

Bottles To The Ground’s other release comes from The Meffs. The Essex, UK two piece’s new 10″ EP Broken Britain Pt. 2 was produced by Frank Turner. Check out the music video for one of the tracks below and grab the wax here (US) or here (UK exclusive variant).

Our friends at Dead Broke Rekerds have issued a second pressing of their Fifteen – The Choice of a New Generation reissue. There are 257 copies on black vinyl, and 100 of each color variant. Head over to their webstore to grab your copy of this East Bay punk classic.

Listen up, true believers! The Bouncing SoulsAnchors Aweigh turns 20 this year and to mark the occasion, it’s back in print on colored wax! 500 copies on “toxic green” colored wax, to be specific. Get it here.

The VandalsHollywood Potato Chip is getting a new pressing on blue/white haze colored vinyl. I’ve seen this available to pre-order pretty much everywhere, but Amazon‘s probably the cheapest option with free Prime shipping. Or if you’re really frugal and don’t give a shit about color variants, the black LP is also on sale for $16 on Amazon.

RECORD OF THE WEEK

It’s been a while since we featured a Record of the Week(!) on the Record Radar, but what better way to end the streak than with a killer new record from a Canadian pop-punk band? Hellaphant‘s debut LP Crumble and Rise caught me by surprise in the best way possible. Listen below and grab it on vinyl here (shipping to the US is very reasonably priced!). And don’t forget to tell ’em your pals at Dying Scene sent ya!

That’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave us a comment below, or send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next week!

Wanna catch up on all of our Record Radar posts? Click here and you’ll be taken to a page with all the past entries in the column. Magic!

Viagra Boys brought their post-punk chaos to Boston on Saturday, February 18th to the very sold-out Royale Boston. Lip Critic opened the show and wasted no time bringing the energy in the room to all-time highs. Both bands had the audience absolutely partying the entire show long.

In 2019 Viagra Boys practically tore down Great Scott, Allston’s iconic, now closed, venue. Flash forward to 2023 and they have exploded into the stratosphere selling out rooms like Royale on their headline tour following their new album Cave World. (*Editor’s note: Great Scott was awesome and held like 250 people tops. Royale is a 1000-capacity venue.)

Lip Critic was an excellent addition to this show and who doesn’t love a two-band bill? They matched Viagra Boys energy perfectly and had an enthralling stage presence.

DS Review: Lucero reinvent their rock-and-roll roots on “Should’ve Learned By Now”

It’s weird to think of an album as being a “back to basics” record when you’re a band that has gone through as many changes in sonic direction as Lucero has over their quarter-century run, but that’s exactly where the Memphis-based quintet find themselves on their latest release, Should’ve Learned By Now (out today on […]

It’s weird to think of an album as being a “back to basics” record when you’re a band that has gone through as many changes in sonic direction as Lucero has over their quarter-century run, but that’s exactly where the Memphis-based quintet find themselves on their latest release, Should’ve Learned By Now (out today on Thirty Tigers/Liberty & Lament). The album marks the band’s eleventh full-length release – twelfth if you count The Attic Tapes, which you’re certainly allowed to do – and represents the band’s most straight-forward dare-I-say “rock and roll” record in quite some time, probably since at least Nobody’s Darlings.

The festivities get started with “One Last F.U.” which is a song that’s been floating around for the better part of the last half-decade at this point, a crowd favorite that finally made it onto a proper record. It’s a raucous barn-burner of a song, three-and-a-half minutes of four-on-the-floor rock (complete with cowbell, albeit maybe not enough) and squelchy guitars and more piss-and-vinegar in the lyrics than we’ve heard from the mouth of Ben Nichols in quite some time. More on that later.

The gas pedal stays pinned down for “Macon If We Make It,” a ripper of a tune that intertwines a literal storm outside with a figurative storm back home, a theme that returns a few songs later on the acoustic-driven ditty (am I allowed to call a song a ditty on a punk rock website?) “Raining For Weeks.” “Nothing’s Alright,” another track that quickly made a great impression when it debuted live toward the end of last year, brings with it a big, anthemic chorus. Throughout the record, Brian Venable continues to do that thing that really, only Brian Venable does, his wandering, pinch harmonic-filled guitar lines as snarly as ever, shining brightly on tracks like “One Last F.U.” and “Macon If We Make It” and personal favorites “Buy A Little Time” and the title track. The latter two continue the album’s general sonic theme of big uptempo rock songs that will quickly make their way into the setlist, to the delight of many a longtime fan from back in the band’s more raucous early days. While many of the tracks on Should’ve Learned By Now have been around a while and didn’t fit stylistically with the likes of their last record, 2021’s When You Found Me, “At The Show” is a straight-forward track that really could have been a thematic holdover from the Tennessee sessions two decades prior (or, hell, even from the Red 40 years).

That’s not to say that the album is all boilerplate up-tempo rockers. “She Leads Me Now” is a pretty, mid-tempo not-quite-ballad that actually features vocal harmonies, a rarity on a Lucero record. The aforementioned “Raining For Weeks” comes complete with a pretty piano melody that belies the track’s melancholy lyrics. “Drunken Moon” is a legitimate ballad with even more vocal harmonies (perfected by the trio of Edwards brothers from LA Edwards on the last East Coast run if you were lucky enough to catch it). As per usual, the rhythm section of Roy Berry and John C. Stubblefield provide a stable foundation for the rest of the musical structure to build off. Neither would win awards for flashiest or over-the-top playing, but that’s never been what Lucero has called for musically. With Rick Steff on keys (and again on accordion as an unexpected and welcome treat on album-closer “Time To Go Home”) providing texture and melodies and Nichols and Venable’s inimitable styles of guitar-playing, Berry and Stubblefield – both live and on record – serve as the closest thing you’ll find to guardrails in a Lucero sound.

Lyrically, Ben Nichols has made a career out of tapping into the role of barroom poet. He’s been heart-breakingly honest at times and revealed a lot of himself through tales of loves both unrequited (especially in the earlier years) and more recently, unadulterated, especially with the prominent role that the women in his life have taken over the last handful of years. And of course there have been the more character-driven songs that have spoken to the human condition and to people trying to make their respective ways through various trials and tribulations and staring down the ghosts of the consequences of their actions. On Should’ve Known By Now, Nichols seems to have also stripped away some of the imagery in his stories, keeping the context a little simpler (look, mom…curse words!) yet somehow, perhaps unintentionally, revealing more of himself in the process than meets the eye, particularly on songs like “Buy A Little Time” and “Drunken Moon.”

I’ve been dyed-in-the-wool Lucero fan for a lot of years and have traveled many, many miles to see the band and its members and I’m happy to follow them down whatever musical rabbit holes they want to venture down. You want so sing tear-jerkers about unrequited love? Check. Whiskey nights and rodeos? Check. Keyboards and horns and a traditional Memphis soul influence? Sounds good. Accordion-infused World War II songs? Let’s do it. Synthesizers and soaring guitars and post-apocalyptic retellings of Little Red Riding Hood? Absolutely. Campfire singalongs inspired by an incredibly bleak Cormac McCarthy western novel? Let’s do it. Trap-horror instrumental movie soundtracks? Sign me up. The weirded and newer the direction, the better.

And yet, I really, really enjoy Should’ve Learned By Now. There’s something about the singularity of musical focus and putting forth a no-frills rock record that results in a record that fits in the collection like a glove. Without really sounding like any previous Lucero record, it somehow encapsulates some core tenets of all of the albums that precede it in the band’s oeuvre. Once described semi-tongue-in-cheekily as “too country for punk rock and too punk rock for country,” Lucero circa 2023 probably don’t qualify as either one now, because they’ve carved out their own niche. They’re not really country or punk or Memphis soul or Americana or roots rock or whatever other labels we might want to throw at them. They’re Lucero. We really should’ve learned by now.

Mess of Everything was produced by Luke McNeill of The Copyrights, who also plays with Local Drags frontman Lanny Durbin in Starter Jackets. Still, the songs are as melodic as ever and stay true to their pop sensibilities.

Hello, friends! My name’s Dylan, but you probably know me better as Dying Scene editor “Screeching Bottlerocket”. I’m sure you read “Top 10 Punk Rock Albums of All Time” and broke out your pitchforks before clicking the link. Settle down! This isn’t meant to be a definitive list by any means, I just thought it would be fun to tell you about some of my personal favorite punk rock albums. If you like the same shit I do, that’s cool. If you think my list is overly 90’s centric trash, that’s also cool. Enough formalities, let’s have some fun! These are my Top 10 Punk Rock Albums of All Time:

#10

RAMONES
Too Tough To Die

I’ve probably already lost some of you picking this record over the self-titled LP, Leave Home or Rocket to Russia, but it’s no secret that I love Too Tough To Die. The production is great, the songs are great, and Richie brought the balls back to the Ramones‘ sound. This is my all-time favorite Ramones album. Waaaaaa Warthog!!!

#9

NO FUN AT ALL
Out of Bounds

No Fun At All is one of the greatest skate punk bands of all time. If these guys were from the states they’d be much bigger. Nevertheless, the Swedish skate punk band has been chugging along for 30 years. Out of Bounds is a top tier 90’s punk album. No bad songs to be found, but some of my favorites are the first four tracks, “In A Moment”, “Invitation”, and the title track. This is a bad ass record.

#8

BAD RELIGION
The Gray Race

Though I’m sure most of you wouldn’t consider The Gray Race to be the pinnacle of Bad Religion‘s discography, I’ve got a major soft spot for this album. My introduction to BR was hearing “Them and Us” and “Ten in 2010” while playing Crazy Taxi. I love this record, Bobby’s drumming is awesome, my favorite song is “The Streets of America”.

#7

STRUNG OUT
Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues

When it comes to 90’s skate punk, Strung Out‘s Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues is the gold standard. This album seems to build as you listen to it; every song is better than the last. It’s a perfect record.

#6

NOFX
So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes

Picking a favorite NOFX album is a tough task, but ultimately I had to go with So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes. This is probably their most well-produced record and it’s got some of my favorite NOFX songs like “Kids of the K-Hole”, “180 Degrees”, “Eat the Meek”, and “The Desperation’s Gone”. Mike’s bass sounds awesome, too.

#5

FRENZAL RHOMB
Meet the Family

I seriously considered putting one of Frenzal Rhomb‘s two most recent records here; they’re both excellent. 1997’s Meet the Family prevailed on the strength of classics like “Mum Changed The Locks”, “Mr. Charisma”, and “All Your Friends”. Is this Frenzal’s best album? I don’t know! It’s my favorite though.

#4

BELVEDERE
Fast Forward Eats the Tape

Fast Forward Eats the Tape is a criminally underrated record by an equally underappreciated band. Every single Belvedere album is killer but this one’s the top dog. Steve Rawles and co. have always been head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to songwriting and technical proficiency. My favorite song on here is “All About Perspectives”. This is an essential skate punk record.

#3

MXPX
Life In General

MxPx is one of my all time favorite bands. Life In General is one of my all time favorite records. They were at the top of their game and captured lightning in a bottle on this album, delivering 40 minutes of 90’s pop-punk excellence. My arms get sore just listening to Yuri hammer away on the drums.

#2

GREEN DAY
Insomniac

Like most people my age, Dookie was my introduction to punk rock, but there’s something about Insomniac that strikes a chord with me. This album has a more aggressive, no-nonsense feel than its predecessor and it has my favorite Green Day song “Walking Contradiction”. If I’m pissed about something and wanna blow off some steam, this is usually the album I turn to. I can always count on ol’ reliable.

#1

LESS THAN JAKE
Losing Streak

I’m a Florida Man so naturally Less Than Jake is my favorite band. I love all their records but Losing Streak rules the roost. I listen to this a few times a week and will never tire of it. That seamless transition from “Happyman” into “9th At Pine” gets me every. fucking. time. Losing Streak is my all-time favorite record.

So there ya have it, those are Dying Scene editor Screeching Bottlerocket’s Top 10 Punk Rock Albums of All Time! Thanks for checking it out. I’m curious what your favorite albums are! Lemme know in the comments on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or on here.
