For the uninitiated, The Windowsill plays a distinct brand of 90’s pop-punk that you’ll enjoy if you’re into bands like Screeching Weasel and The Queers. Your pals at Dying Scene gave Focus a 5 Star review! Needless to say, this is highly recommended listening.

Our pals at Red Scare Industries have announced they will be reissuing Chicago punk band Sludgeworth‘s long out of print Losers of the Year LP. For the uninitiated, this short-lived project was fronted by Screeching Weasel‘s Dan Vapid and also featured SW bandmate Brian Vermin on drums.

Losers of the Year was originally released on CD in 1995 through Lookout! Records. This is the career-spanning compilation album’s first-ever pressing on vinyl. It will also be getting a CD/digital release with two previously unreleased bonus tracks.

This is a highly sought after record among pop-punk collectors, and it’s going fast. Head over to Red Scare’s webstore to grab your copy (and be sure to snag SACK‘s new record while you’re there, that beast is finally available on vinyl, too!).

DS Band Spotlight: UK punks Bear Away make their debut with “A Drastic Tale Of Western Living”

A few days ago, I presented our Facebook followers with a simple task: Recommend some awesome bands to be featured on the next entry in Dying Scene’s Ten Underrated Bands You Should Be Listening To column. A few days ago, I presented our Facebook followers with a simple task: Recommend some awesome bands to be featured on the next entry in Dying Scene’s Ten Underrated Bands You Should Be Listening To column. You guys came through big time, and now I have something like 200 fucking bands to sift through! What have I gotten myself into?! 🥴

Anyway, one of the bands that immediately grabbed my attention was Bear Away. Recommended by a reader named Kevin from Las Vegas, these guys have totally flown under my radar for the entirety of the three years they’ve been around. I took Kevin’s advice and checked out their brand new album A Drastic Tale of Western Living and I really liked what I heard! Don’t just take my word for it, listen for yourself below.

Haling from Scarborough, UK, the four piece Bear Away has a kinda fuzzy, melodic sound with a bit of a Midwest punk feel. A Drastic Tale… is a very solid debut effort that will serve as a great introduction to new listeners (like me!). No matter what corner of the world you’re in, you can probably grab a copy of this record. Brassneck and Engineer Records released it in the UK, with the following labels handling international distribution: Sell the Heart Records in North America, Shield Recordings in Europe, and Waterslide Records in Japan. So if you like what you hear, hit up one of those awesome labels! And tell ’em your friends at Dying Scene sent ya 😉

  1. Hola! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and finally got the courage to go
ahead and give you a shout out from New Caney Texas!
Just wanted to tell you keep up the fantastic work!

Greetings, fellow degenerates! Welcome to the latest installment of the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! Greetings, fellow degenerates! Welcome to the latest installment of the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we got it. So kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Let’s start this week of with a banger 💥 Propagandhi‘s Supporting Caste is being reissued on pink colored vinyl thanks to an extremely successful crowdfunding campaign. Back in print for the first time in seven years! Head over to their Bandcamp page to get in on the action.

Another huge drop we let you know about earlier this week is Fat Wreck reissuing four 2000’s era Strung Out records on colored vinyl. The Element of Sonic Defiance, An American Paradox, and Exile in Oblivion are back in print for the first time in a long time. Blackhawks Over Los Angeles finds itself on wax for the first time ever. These are very limited, and most of the colored LPs have already sold out. Head over to the label’s webstore for the leftover scraps and black vinyl.

Those who read last week’s Record Radar know that NOFX has finally launched colored vinyl pre-orders for their upcoming LP Double Album. Well, much to the dismay of you collector nerds, a new “golden green” variant (it just looks green to me 🤷) has popped up on some European retailers’ sites. This is the EU indie exclusive color variant – here is one of the many places you can get it.

Newbury Comics has some new exclusive color variants of the self-titled debut albums from both The Interrupters and PUP (coincidence? most likely, yes). Each of these pressings are limited to 500 copies. Visit their store to get your hands on them.

Florida pop-punk veterans New Found Glory have a new acoustic record on the way. The 14-track LP titled Make the Most of It features seven new songs, and stripped-down versions of seven NFG classics. Check out the first single “Dream Born Again” below and get the wax here (green vinyl) or here (yellow vinyl). Or get both! I don’t give a shit, to be perfectly honest with you.

Bad Brains live album The Youth Are Getting Restless is back in print for the first time since its original release in 1990. This LP was recorded in the Netherlands in ’87. Zia Records and Brooklyn Vegan each have their own exclusive variant of this one. If you get it from Brooklyn Vegan, don’t forget to use their 10% off code – don’t be a sucker who pays 30 fuckin’ dollars for a record.

The Flatliners‘ latest album New Ruin makes its third(?) Record Radar appearance! The band has announced test pressings of the LP (limited to 15 copies! and it has some cool alternate cover art) will be on sale at Dine Alone Records‘ storefront in Toronto on Record Store Day Black Friday. More info here on how you can acquire one of these in exchange for Canadian dollars.

Speaking of Record Store Day Black Friday… have you heard Red Scare is reissuing Masked Intruder‘s debut album? Well, they are! And the only place you (maybe) can get a copy is your local record store on Black Friday (November 25th). The label usually throws a handful of copies of their RSD releases up on their webstore, too, but you didn’t hear that from me 😏

As I’m writing this, the Old Wives just announced a new record! Mega Low Maniac, the Edmonton punk band’s first album in five years, is due out in early December on Rad Girlfriend Records. Check out the first single “Me & Jack” below and go here to grab the LP.

Bringing up the rear on this week’s Record Radar is Neck Deep, with a reissue of 2014’s Wishful Thinking. Brooklyn Vegan, Newbury Comics, and Zia Records all have their own exclusive color variants of this one and they’re all ultra-limited and pretty and yada yada yada blah blah blah.

RECORD OF THE WEEK!

We here at Dying Scene are all about trying new things, so this week I’m challenging you, loyal reader, to listen to something new! This week’s Record of the Week comes from our friends at Punk Rock Radar (no affiliation with the Record Radar 😉) and Cat’s Claw Records. It’s a fucking awesome Split LP from Lookit, Martians! and The Cheap Pops. If you enjoy 90’s pop-punk even half as much as I do, this shit’s right up your alley. Check it out below, and pre-order the LP here (US) or here (EU).

And that’s all, folks! Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs. See ya next week!

DS Exlusive: Pop-punk vets Goin’ Places premiere song off upcoming covers album

Have you heard the good news? Staten Island pop-punk veterans Goin’ Places have a new covers album coming out, and your friends at Dying Scene have an exclusive stream of one of the tracks! Have you heard the good news? Staten Island pop-punk veterans Goin’ Places have a new covers album coming out, and your friends at Dying Scene have an exclusive stream of one of the tracks! Well, it’s not actually new… it’s actually pretty old. But it’s new to you!

We’ll let the band explain the situation (they’re better with words than we are):

“Back in early 2002 we recorded our first album “Girl Songwriting 101”. After we left the studio we had several months of downtime while it was getting mixed, mastered and shopped to labels. So we did what any other band would do and said “let’s record another album”. We started rehearsing and soon after recorded an album called Fingerboard Road”. It featured 18 songs by 4 guys from Liverpool (yes, THOSE 4 guys). We didn’t want two new albums out at the same time, so we decided to wait 6 months or so to release “Fingerboard Road”. Somehow 6 months turned into 20 years. The album sat on a shelf gathering dust and aside from a very limited digital release, never saw the light of day… until now.”

Check out Goin’ Places’ cover of “I Saw Her Standing There” below, and head over to Mom’s Basement Recordswebstore on Friday, November 18th to grab your copy of Fingerboard Road, along with some of their other awesome pop-punk records.

DS Album Review: The Windowsill’s pop-punk prowess shines on “Focus”

Dutch pop-punks The Windowsill have long held a special place in my heart as one of the true heavy hitters of modern “Ramonescore” style pop-punk. Dutch pop-punks The Windowsill have long held a special place in my heart as one of the true heavy hitters of modern “Ramonescore” style pop-punk. Since releasing their last record Make Your Own Kind of Music in 2017, the band shifted focus to their equally amazing side project Giant Eagles, through which they released one of my favorite albums of 2020: Second Landing. But now the focus is back on the Windowsill and their new album Focus (pun very much so intended).

Focus had me hooked from the start with “Can’t Stop Love”. I’m a sucker for albums with well sequenced tracklists, and it’s hard to imagine they could have picked a more perfect opening track than this one. This quick shot of head-nodding, foot-tapping pop-punk was the perfect companion to the energy drink I was sipping the morning I decided to give this album its first listen.

Equally strong is the track that immediately follows: “Poor Buffalo”. This song keeps the momentum going, providing the first heavy dose of the Screeching Weasel-esque “nursery rhyme” style guitar leads that are a beloved hallmark of genre. And plenty subsequent doses of this melodic ear candy are delivered throughout the remainder of Focus.

I could continue to provide a track-by-track breakdown, but that would get boring and I’d undoubtedly run out of words to use. What I will say is that all 12 songs on this record are great, and equally deserving of being individually recognized. But if I had to pick favorites (in addition to the two tracks I already highlighted), I’d probably go with “The Dreams You Used to Sell”, “It’s Killing Me”, “Love You Better”, and “These Tears Are For Real”. I’m sure if you ask me a week from now what my favorite songs are, I’ll have a completely different answer for you.

Focus is an incredible album; one of the very best I’ve heard this year, pop-punk or otherwise. I thought I had my Top 10 Albums of 2022 locked in, but I thought wrong. The Windowsill showed up in the 11th hour and stole a spot on my list with ease. If you aren’t listening to this record, you’re fucking up big time.

Official Review Score: Focus receives Dying Scene’s maximum 5-Star Safety Rating

Focus is available on CD/digital here. For my fellow record collectors, vinyl should be coming in May, 2023.
